The Last Stand 2013

Sheriff Ray Owens, portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, finds himself trapped in a monotonous routine, enforcing the law in the quiet border town of Sommerton Junction, Arizona. His past as a LAPD officer haunts him, particularly a disastrous operation that left his partner crippled and his unit devastated. The only crimes in his jurisdiction are of a trivial nature, ranging from the Mayor’s misdeeds, like parking his striking red Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the fire lane, to the eccentric antics of vintage arms collector Lewis Dinkum, played by Johnny Knoxville, who amusingly fires weapons at slabs of meat along with local deputies.

Everything changes one fateful night when notorious international drug lord Gabriel Cortez, played by Eduardo Noriega, manages a stunning escape from FBI custody in Las Vegas. Speeding away in a custom Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1, he takes Agent Ellen Richards hostage and flees towards Mexico at breakneck speeds exceeding 200 mph. The execution of his escape raises eyebrows, prompting suspicions of insider information regarding the FBI’s operation leading to his transfer for impending execution.

Meanwhile, Agent John Bannister, played by Forest Whitaker, sets up a blockade in nearby Bullhead City, Arizona. However, Cortez’s henchmen ruthlessly eliminate officers present, allowing Cortez to continue his flight while deftly evading two approaching SWAT vehicles with his driving prowess.

As dawn breaks, Sheriff Owens sends his trusted deputies Jerry Bailey and Sarah Torrance (played by Jaimie Alexander, who is not linked here but is crucial to the story) to investigate the disappearance of local farmer Parsons, only to discover his brutal murder. This distressing finding leads them on a trail of tire tracks that connects to Cortez’s right-hand man, Thomas Burrell, portrayed by Peter Stormare, who is busy deploying a mobile assault bridge at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Tragedy strikes when Bailey is shot during a fierce confrontation with Burrell’s armed thugs. In the wake of his friend’s death, Owens takes decisive action, rallying his remaining deputies and even enlisting local resident Frank Martinez, played by Rodrigo Santoro, who is a former Marine grappling with PTSD and a strong resolve not to let his comrades down this time. To ensure their success, Owens also convinces Dinkum to join their ranks as a deputy, but only under the condition that he retains a weapon previously taken from him.

As the clock ticks towards 7:10 a.m., Owens and his loyal team prepare a barricade on the town’s main road, readying for the impending attack from Burrell and his men. An intense firefight ensues, showcasing the courage of Owens’ team, with Figuerola heroically holding off the assailants and Dinkum providing critical support with a mounted Vickers machine gun. Deputy Torrance picks off several adversaries from elevated positions, showcasing the group’s synergy in this crisis.

Ultimately, when Cortez hurtles into town, ejecting Agent Richards before his vehicle makes a desperate dash through a cornfield, chaos erupts. In a climactic scenario, Sheriff Owens confronts Cortez on a bridge, where both men engage in a fierce struggle. Owens, enduring significant injuries, manages to best the drug lord, snapping handcuffs onto him and dragging him back into town with the remnants of the Mayor’s once-proud Camaro as a reminder of the havoc that unfolded.

The scene concludes with Agent Bannister taking Cortez back into custody and arresting Richards for her transgressions. Deputies Figuerola and Dinkum are whisked off to the hospital for their injuries, while Martinez returns the deputy badge that Owens entrusted him with, receiving a heartfelt insistence to keep it—he’s earned that distinction. The story wraps up as Owens delivers a final warning to the Mayor regarding his parking habits, before walking alongside Torrance and Martinez into the diner, a homage to the chaos they’ve just survived.
