Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, portrayed by Kevin Kline, weaves a captivating tale reminiscent of a high-stakes soccer match during a thrilling flashback featuring a semi-final showdown between France and China. In the midst of the pulsating stadium atmosphere, the French coach Yves Gluant, played by Jason Statham, captivates the crowd not only with his strategy but also by donning the illustrious Pink Panther diamond ring. After asserting his triumph on the field and securing victory for France in an exhilarating sudden death, the storyline takes a dark turn when Gluant is murdered by a poison dart, leaving the diamond mysteriously missing from his possession.
Fueled by an insatiable desire to clinch the coveted Medal of Honor — the esteemed Legion D’Honneur — Dreyfus makes the questionable decision to elevate the bumbling and decidedly incompetent Jacques Clouseau, embodied by Steve Martin, to the rank of Inspector, tasking him with the responsibility of solving the perplexing Pink Panther case. Clouseau, whose tendency to stumble into chaos is legendary, soon proves that his promotion is as dubious as his abilities in the field. Dreyfus, however, is desperate; having been overlooked seven times for the prestigious award, he yearns for a breakthrough.
As part of his cunning plan, Dreyfus assembles a covert crew of elite investigators, utilizing Clouseau as a mere puppet to deflect media scrutiny and spotlight away from his own team. He assigns Gilbert Ponton, portrayed masterfully by Jean Reno, as Clouseau’s assistant, instructing Ponton to monitor Clouseau’s every move. In a twist of fate, the two develop a camaraderie, and as Clouseau fumbles his way through investigations, he inadvertently captures the affection of Secretary Nicole Durant, played by Emily Mortimer.
Despite Dreyfus’s meticulous orchestration, he underestimates the bond that forms between Ponton and Clouseau. While Clouseau’s makeshift “detective work” yields little in terms of actual leads, he stumbles upon the fact that Gluant had amassed many enemies, suggesting the potential for foul play among those closest to him. The plot thickens when Bizu, a member of the French football team, hints at the possibility that Raymond Laroque, a affluent casino owner and Gluant’s associate, could have been involved in the coaching legend’s demise, especially since Gluant had been siphoning funds from their joint restaurant venture to satisfy his gambling addiction.
As comedic chaos ensues, Clouseau haphazardly tries his hand at combative tactics during interrogations, resulting in hilariously disastrous outcomes, such as electrocuting himself while demonstrating interrogation devices. The atmosphere darkens when Bizu, now emerged as a prime suspect due to his past indiscretions with Xania — Gluant’s pop star girlfriend — is shot dead in the locker room by an unseen assassin. Just as the case spirals further into absurdity, Clouseau learns of Raymond’s questionable financial motives concerning a life insurance policy on Gluant.
In a surprising turn of events, Clouseau intersects with British Secret Agent 006, played by Clive Owen, who showcases Clouseau’s trench coat during a casino heist thwarting. Clouseau’s accidental heroics lead him to unwittingly gain the credit and admiration of the media, which exacerbates Dreyfus’s growing frustration.
Upon returning to France, Clouseau’s misadventures see him mistakenly putting himself in harm’s way, ending up in a situation where he struggles to articulate “hamburger” at the airport, resulting in his arrest and subsequent public humiliation. Meanwhile, Dreyfus lays plans to apprehend Dr. Pang, a suspected Chinese envoy and the alleged murderer, at the high-profile Presidential Ball where Xania will perform.
Suddenly awakened to the truth through an online article, Clouseau discovers a critical piece of evidence that leads him to believe that Xania is in grave danger. Acting quickly, Clouseau and Ponton infiltrate the glamorous event, where Dreyfus’s plot to corner Dr. Pang falters. Instead, they bravely manage to thwart an assassination attempt on Xania, discovering that Yuri, the Russian team trainer with a vendetta, is behind the plot. With evidence mounting against Yuri, Clouseau’s antics reveal the shocking truth that the Pink Panther diamond was mislaid within Xania’s handbag all along; a gift from Gluant before his untimely end.
As the dust settles, Clouseau emerges victorious, finally earning the Legion D’Honneur, while Dreyfus is left bitterly disappointed. Their fates intertwine comedically when Clouseau unwittingly drags Dreyfus down the street with his car door, setting in motion another round of clumsy chaos for the Chief Inspector. The saga culminates with Clouseau inadvertently sending Dreyfus crashing out of a hospital window into the Seine, leaving everyone — including Clouseau, Ponton, and Nicole— to witness yet another silly disaster unravel.
