In June 1969, a young family seeks refuge from an impending tornado. Tragedy strikes when the father tries to secure the storm cellar door but is tragically sucked up into the tornado. As the storm rages, his wife and daughter, Jo (Helen Hunt), witness the horror but Jo, captivated by the tornado’s beauty, is left forever changed.

Fast forward to the present, meteorologists at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) are monitoring a burgeoning storm system in Oklahoma, one that threatens to unleash a significant outbreak of tornadoes. Meanwhile, former storm chaser Bill Harding (Bill Paxton) and his fiancée, Dr. Melissa Reeves (Jami Gertz), are en route to gather final divorce paperwork from Bill’s estranged wife, Dr. Jo Harding. Driven by her father’s death, Jo is now committed to chasing tornadoes to prevent others from experiencing similar loss.

Jo’s team includes the quirky Dusty Davis (Philip Seymour Hoffman), navigator Robert Rabbit Nurick (Alan Ruck), Laurence (Jeremy Davies), photographer Joey (Joey Slotnick), and several others, all devoted to the cause. Despite her lingering feelings for Bill, Jo strives to convince him to rejoin the team with a groundbreaking tornado-analyzing device known as ‘Dorothy’, comprised of four distinct weather machines designed to discern tornado behaviors from within their chaos.

Challenges arise when Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes), a rival storm chaser, reveals that he has appropriated Bill’s ‘Dorothy’ concept for his own device, the D.O.T. 3. Yet, Bill chooses to remain with Jo’s team for a day, determined to outsmart Jonas. As a small F1 tornado approaches, Bill and Jo find themselves caught in its path, thrusting them into a heart-pounding encounter that reignites their longstanding connection.

During their quest, they face numerous storms including one catastrophic F4 tornado that devastates their surroundings, forcing the team to take shelter in makeshift locations and leading to heartbreaking losses, including injuries to team members like Preacher (Scott Thomson). Their commitment to gathering data intensifies, revealing not only the dangers of their profession but also the deep-rooted emotions between Bill and Jo.

Amidst rising tension, Jo finally confronts her feelings for Bill during a lull in their storm-chasing activities, while their team grapples with personal conflicts and external pressures. Ultimately, a colossal F5 tornado brings them to the brink, necessitating a last-ditch effort where they unleash Dorothy 4. They launch it directly into the storm but must flee for their lives as the tornado wreaks havoc around them.

In a breathtaking finale, Bill and Jo endure harrowing moments as they experience the tornado’s inner workings, surviving an experience that solidifies their bond. The tornado’s destructive force dissipates, leaving them to contemplate their future, both personally and professionally. The film culminates in Bill and Jo rekindling their romance with a tender kiss, while their team celebrates a hard-fought victory against nature’s might.
