The story begins with Asha, portrayed by Ariana DeBose, a spirited young woman who shares the enchanting tale of King Magnifico, played by Chris Pine. Once burdened by heartache, Magnifico dedicated his life to mastering the mystical arts, ultimately rising to become a formidable sorcerer. He joined hands with his beloved wife, Queen Amaya, enacted by Angelique Cabral, to forge the magical kingdom of Rosas, a realm thriving with wonder and enchantment.

As Asha’s captivating story unfolds, she introduces us to her loving family, including her mother Sakina, represented by Natasha Rothwell, and her lively grandfather Sabino, played by Victor Garber, who is full of life at the age of 100. As Sabino approaches his milestone birthday, the family buzzes with anticipation, hoping that he will be chosen to have his deepest wish granted during the illustrious Wishing Ceremony hosted by Magnifico.

In the meantime, Asha is gearing up for an important interview with the king, aspiring for the coveted title of his apprentice. Accompanied by Valentino, her loyal goat voiced by Alan Tudyk, she takes on the role of an ambassador, welcoming visitors to Rosas and imparting tales of its rich history and Magnifico’s dazzling achievements.

Asha confides in her best friend Dahlia, portrayed by Jennifer Kumiyama, a gifted baker who bravely navigates life in a wheelchair. Together with their vibrant circle of friends – including the grumpy Gabo (Harvey Guillén), the sleepy Simon (Evan Peters), the shy Bazeema (Della Saba), the cheerful Hal (Niko Vargas), the sniffly Safi (Ramy Youssef), and the endearing Dario (Jon Rudnitsky) – Asha receives invaluable support and advice on approaching the elusive king while encouraging her to embrace her vulnerabilities.

When Queen Amaya arrives to take Asha to her audience with Magnifico, the king’s initially welcoming demeanor quickly shifts to discomfort as he reminisces about Asha’s late father. He then draws her attention to his expansive collection of wishes, labelled “At All Costs,” where Asha discovers her grandfather Sabino’s heartfelt desire to use his music to spread joy across Rosas. Upon questioning the king about fulfilling this wish, the atmosphere turns dark as Magnifico warns that such aspirations could lead to chaos, deeming them too perilous to grant.

As the story progresses, we learn a shocking truth: each time Magnifico grants a wish, the individual’s memory of that wish vanishes, rendering them reliant on his capricious decisions. The very fabric of reality within Rosas appears increasingly fragile, prompting doubts about the nature of Magnifico’s powers and the repercussions of his reign.

During the grand wishing ceremony, the king manipulates the occasion to solidify his control, deliberately holding back Sabino’s wish from realization. He also dismisses Asha’s legitimacy as his apprentice, humiliating her during a family dinner. Undeterred, Asha later shares a heartfelt moment with Valentino beneath the stars, pouring her heart out and invoking a cosmic energy that reverberates throughout the kingdom.

Witnessing this extraordinary moment, even Magnifico is left astonished. The star Asha wished upon descends, imbuing the kingdom’s flora and fauna with a magical aura. Valentino, now transformed, partners with Asha as they delve into the mystery surrounding this newfound magic.

As Asha communes with the star, she learns that this power isn’t meant for wish-granting, but could help her and Valentino uncover the hidden desires of her mother and grandfather. With newfound determination, they venture into Magnifico’s castle while grappling with whether to share the unfolding truth with Dahlia and their friends. Eventually, Asha chooses to unite her friends in a daring plan to infiltrate the castle.

Amid the chaos, the star manages to find Sabino’s wish before Magnifico can intervene, unintentionally causing a minor disruption. As the kingdom gathers outside the castle, Magnifico usurps the moment, proposing to grant the wishes of anyone possessing knowledge about the strange magic. Dahlia cleverly stalls for time by asking pointed questions, leading the kingdom’s folks to doubt the king’s true intentions, which enrages him. Retreating to his study, Magnifico laments his plight before seeking forbidden magic as a means to reclaim control.

Returning home, Asha excitedly shares Sabino’s wish with him, only for the moment to turn grim as Magnifico barges in, crushing Sakina’s wish and causing her immense grief. Empowered by the wishes he’s absorbed, Magnifico grows even stronger, further darkening the atmosphere of the realm.

Asha swiftly gathers her family, Valentino, and Star for protection and sends Sabino and Sakina to safety on a nearby island. She prepares to confront the wicked king, determined to hold him accountable for his treachery. Tensions rise as Magnifico places a bounty on Asha’s head, revealing Simon’s disloyalty and transformation into his loyal knight as an unfortunate consequence of his misguided wish.

A once benevolent ruler, Magnifico now wields a dark staff, controlling Simon with nefarious magic. The atmosphere grows tense as Asha tries to explain her innocence, urging her friends to acknowledge the tyrannical nature of their ruler. The tides turn when Amaya joins Asha, finally recognizing Magnifico’s irredeemable malice and joining the struggle.

As Asha presses on, undeterred by the unfolding betrayals, she seeks to distract Magnifico while Valentino and the teens infiltrate the room containing the kingdom’s wishes. In a clever trick, Simon attempts to impersonate the king but ultimately fails, leading to a thrilling standoff with the woodland creatures. Asha, on horseback, races back just in time to thwart Magnifico’s malevolent intentions, only for him to capture Star and declare his control over all wishes.

As she approaches the tower, Asha confronts Magnifico’s overwhelming magical capabilities, but with her empowered words, she ignites hope within the captured subjects, channeling their collective strength into a force that shatters their bonds. The wishes are restored, and Star is freed, igniting jubilation throughout the kingdom.

Following this victory, Amaya takes the throne of Rosas, ensuring Magnifico is imprisoned for his numerous failures and wrongs. In the spirit of newfound freedom, Sabino seizes the opportunity to celebrate, while Star bestows Asha with a magical wand, empowering her to serve as a guardian for the people. As the night draws to a close, Asha encourages her friends to continue realizing their own dreams, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display across the sky, heralding a new era of hope.

As the credits roll, the screen fills with beautiful constellations representing classic Disney characters, and Sabino’s haunting performance of “When You Wish Upon a Star” echoes, encapsulating the enduring power of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
