Plot Summary

Lulu Danger is a waitress at a quaint coffee shop owned by her husband, Shane Danger, in a small town. One evening, while watching television, she sees an intriguing advertisement for a mysterious live event titled An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn; For One Magical Night Only. The sight of Beverly, who she has secretly admired through hidden photographs, sparks great excitement within her.

Meanwhile, Shane becomes enraged upon discovering that Lulu’s brother, Adjay, possesses more money than he does, including a lockbox filled with savings at his spice store. In a poorly thought-out plan, Shane enlists the help of his dim-witted employees, Carl Ronk and Tyrone Paris, to steal the lockbox. Adjay quickly identifies Shane as the thief. Subsequently, while feeling defeated at the laundromat, Adjay encounters a drifter named Colin Keith Threadener, who offers to recover the lockbox for $200.

Colin visits the Dangers’ home, where Lulu mistakenly believes he is an acquaintance of Shane’s. When Colin pulls a gun on Shane demanding the lockbox, Lulu, taking charge, disarms Colin, retrieves the lockbox, and insists he drive her to the hotel.

Checking into the hotel, Lulu and Colin share an awkward yet weirdly flirtatious interaction. Beverly arrives at the hotel accompanied by his loyal Scottish sidekick, Rodney Von Donkensteiger. A stir of recognition flares between Beverly and Lulu; however, Beverly, who communicates through grunts, fails to disclose his awareness to Rodney, who secretly harbors romantic feelings for him.

Behind Rodney’s back, Beverly tries to send a message to Lulu, but Rodney intercepts and drugs him. When Lulu finally meets Beverly, she instead encounters Rodney, who, adorned in synchronized swimming makeup, warns her not to interfere in his relationship with Beverly.

As the show approaches, Beverly becomes ill, resulting in a postponement of the event, which leaves Colin, Lulu, Beverly, and Rodney tangled in a complicated web of affections, while Shane arrives at the hotel searching for the lockbox. The nature of the show remains ambiguous, leading to speculations among the guests.

In a twist of events, Colin spends the night with a woman from the hotel bar, only to later discover she is a prostitute. Upset, he confides in Lulu about the encounter, revealing that he had been a virgin until then. Upon learning about Lulu’s obsession with Beverly, she reveals that he was her college poetry professor who left his wife for her; during a vacation, he supposedly drowned, leaving her emotionally shattered.

The awaited show arrives, featuring a simple musical revue where Rodney and Beverly perform charming Scottish folk songs. In a surprising turn, Beverly articulately shares stories from his time in Scotland and apologizes to Lulu for breaking her heart, expressing that while he values Rodney as a friend, he harbors no romantic feelings for him. Chaos erupts when Shane and Carl interrupt the performance, while Tyrone stealthily steals the lockbox from Colin’s room.

Following the tumult, Lulu confronts Beverly in his room, demanding to understand why he pretended to be dead. He admits the choice was impulsive and that his onstage words lack significance. A heartbroken Lulu departs.

Later, Lulu and Colin reunite at the hotel bar where they seek reconciliation. A new song, F.R. David’s “Words,” plays—one they haven’t encountered before. Lulu invites Colin for a dance, leading to an exuberant moment that climaxes with her leaping into his arms. They return to their room to share a more intimate encounter, but as Lulu dozes off during Colin’s undressing, they awaken to share heartfelt confessions of love, deepening their newfound connection.
