Plot Summary

On February 20, 1963, a young girl named Andie (Hollye Rebecca Suggs) lies under the vast night sky in America’s rural farmlands, her eyes searching for the iconic Friendship 7 as it returns to Earth from its groundbreaking orbital mission. When she spots what seems like a shooting star, she imagines it as John Glenn winking at her, and vows to herself that she will one day follow in his footsteps and become an astronaut.

Fast forward 23 years, and Andie Bergstrom (Kate Capshaw) arrives at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, piloting a T-38 Talon. She meets her husband, fellow astronaut and former moonwalker Zack Bergstrom (Tom Skerritt), as she steps onto the tarmac. Although Andie is now part of NASA’s astronaut program, she has yet to embark on a space mission and feels disheartened after being overlooked for an upcoming flight. Seizing a previous promise, Zack recruits her as an instructor for the summer Space Camp program.

As registration kicks off, a newcomer catches the eye of Zack: Kevin Donaldson (Tate Donovan), who parks his Jeep in Zack’s designated spot. After moving it, Kevin’s gaze follows a young female biplane pilot, Kathryn Fairly (Lea Thompson). Instantly infatuated, he hurries to join the registration line behind her and impulsively snatches someone else’s credentials to join the Blue Team, the same group as Kathryn.

What Kevin doesn’t realize is that the Blue Team is under the guidance of Andie Bergstrom, who is a role model for many, including Kathryn. Andie notices that Kevin is not officially on her list but allows him to stay since one of her students, Hideo Takamini (Scott Holcomb), is missing. The Blue Team also includes three other unique personalities: Tish Ambrosei (Kelly Preston), the valley girl with a sharp intellect, Rudy Tyler (Larry B. Scott), a science-lover from a military background, and Max Graham (Joaquin Phoenix), a kid with an unwavering obsession for Star Wars who has been in the junior program for two years.

Andie assigns roles to her cadets, and to everyone’s surprise, the seemingly carefree Kevin becomes the Shuttle Commander, while determined Kathryn is named Pilot. The rest of the team fills vital positions, where Tish manages communications, Rudy oversees operations, and Max does not have a specific duty assigned. During an initial tour, the Blue Team meets a quirky robot named Jinx (voiced by Frank Welker), created for use on a future space station. Max keeps Jinx hidden in his closet, but when the mischievous Green Team targets him one night, they overwhelm Jinx with challenges, leading to a malfunction in his circuitry. Determined to fix him, Max spends all night repairing Jinx, forging a friendship that the robot cherishes, exclaiming: > “friends forever.”

Despite their camaraderie, the Blue Team struggles to function as a cohesive unit due to Kevin’s lack of seriousness regarding his role. Kathryn faces her own challenges, grappling with her inability to conquer the multi-axis trainer required for aspiring pilots. In an attempt to bond, Kevin and Kathryn sneak out to see the Space Shuttle Atlantis. However, their absence is discovered when Jinx, staying true to his programming, alerts Zack. Kevin blames Max for Jinx’s reveal, causing turmoil within their ranks.

As tensions mount during a joint simulation, the Blue Team botches their mission due to poor communication, resulting in a near-disastrous scenario that leaves Andie no choice but to lecture Kevin on responsibility. Just when they think their chances are gone, the Blue Team gains an unexpected opportunity: they will board Atlantis during a crucial engine test. During this encounter, Jinx seizes the moment to intervene, sending a false reading about a “thermal curtain failure,” which inadvertently pushes Atlantis to the point of launching with the team aboard.

Once in orbit, the challenges deepen. With limited oxygen and no way to communicate, Andie recalls that the Space Station Daedalus is within reach, carrying essential oxygen canisters. As they navigate to Daedalus, Tish attempts to send a Morse code message for help. Meanwhile, Andie risks her life on a dangerous spacewalk to retrieve the canisters, only to discover that they are out of reach. In a heroic moment, Max bravely volunteers to retrieve the tanks, dodging various dangers while trying to assist.

With the oxygen levels dwindling, the survival of the Blue Team becomes a race against time. As they struggle to reset the sequence of oxygen tank fill-ups, they must cooperate to ensure that Andie can fill the tanks correctly to buy them more time. As the situation escalates, Kevin makes a bold choice to override Atlantis’s auto-landing system to save Andie, presenting the team with a slim chance of survival as they explore alternate landing sites.

In a climax filled with tension, Kathryn manages to take control of the shuttle, facing her greatest fear as they enter a precarious spin during re-entry. Drawing on her training and instincts, she expertly regains control, guiding Atlantis to a safe landing in White Sands, securing a triumphant end to a journey filled with friendship, adventure, and bravery.
