The Dark Tower 2017

The movie begins in a camp teeming with children located in the mysterious realm of Mid-World. A peculiar group of creatures, clad in synthetic skins, gathers the children and transports some of them to a menacing machine. At the center of this ominous activity is Walter Padick, also known as The Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey). Among the unfortunate captives, a girl is forced into the machine while her unique “shine” is harnessed to unleash a powerful energy directed at The Dark Tower.

This chilling scene is experienced by Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), a teenager residing in New York City with his mother, Laurie (Kathryn Winnick), and his stepfather, Lon (Nicholas Pauling). Jake battles inner turmoil following the tragic loss of his father, Elmar (Karl Thaning), who sacrificed himself in a blaze trying to save others a year prior. Despite his recurring dreams and drawings depicting the perilous adventures in Mid-World, he is unfairly dismissed by counselors who attribute his vivid visions to trauma.

During a troubling day at school, Jake finds his sketchbook, filled with drawings of his dreams, cruelly snatched by a bully. In a moment of frustration, he retaliates and ends up in a confrontation that draws the attention of other students.

Meanwhile, in Mid-World, a young Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), is with his father, Steven (Dennis Haysbert). They become aware of Walter’s menacing presence in the woods, instinctively preparing their weapons as they recite the Gunslinger’s creed. Tragically, Walter uses his dark magic to cut off Steven’s breath, leading to his demise. Unlike his father, young Roland remains resistant to Walter’s influence and attempts a counterattack, only for Walter to effortlessly catch his bullets.

Back in New York, Jake stumbles upon an abandoned house from his dreams and manages to discover its location online. When two individuals, posing as psychiatric staff, arrive to take him away at Lon’s behest, Jake is quick to spot the telltale scar of their fake skin. Deciding to resist for his mother’s sake, Jake escapes through the window, evading his pursuers in the bustling city streets.

Determined, Jake ventures to Brooklyn to locate the house. Inside, he activates a portal that leads him directly to Mid-World, where he eventually encounters Roland. Initially suspecting Jake of allegiance to Walter, Roland’s suspicions fade when Jake presents his drawings and reveals his knowledge of their shared enemy. Roland divulges Walter’s sinister intent to harness children with shine to bring down The Dark Tower, the crucial link between their worlds, which would unleash unimaginable horrors across both realms.

As night falls, Jake is tormented by a hallucination of his father, and despite Roland’s attempts to prevent him, he reaches out to what appears to be his father—only to be met with a monstrous deception. Roland, undeterred, swiftly dispatches the creature, saving Jake from its clutches.

Meanwhile, Walter discovers the activation of the portal and learns about Jake’s exceptional shine. He travels to Earth, where he confronts Laurie and Lon, brutally killing Lon and demanding Laurie to guide him to Jake’s room, where he uncovers Jake’s extensive knowledge about Mid-World.

Roland takes Jake to a village of seers, seeking counsel from a visionary named Arra (Claudia Kim). That night, chaos erupts as Walter’s minions invade, leading to a fierce struggle for survival, showcasing Roland’s prowess as he defends Jake against their attackers.

Once safety is restored, Roland and Jake return to Earth to seek medical assistance for Roland, only to discover Lon’s lifeless body in Jake’s apartment. Devastated and filled with anger, Jake learns of Walter’s heinous act against his mother, triggering a breakdown. In a moment of consolation, Roland vows to eliminate Walter and begins to mentor Jake in the ways of the Gunslinger, teaching him the creed: > “I do not aim with my hand. He who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I am with my eye. I do not shoot with my hand. I shoot with my mind. I do not kill with my gun. I kill with my heart.”

As they gear up for a final confrontation, Roland finds himself in a gun shop where Walter’s minions seize Jake. Walter confronts Roland, using the shop owner as a pawn against him before retreating with Jake back to Mid-World.

With Jake captive and strapped to the machine, Walter attacks The Dark Tower, causing devastating earthquakes in New York, while the sky ominously glows red. Roland battles through all odds as he fights Walter’s minions in a desperate attempt to reach Jake. Utilizing their mental bond, Jake encourages Roland by recounting the Gunslinger’s creed. Inspired, Roland manages to shoot Walter, striking him after a harrowing exchange of bullets, ultimately finishing with a lethal headshot. With Walter defeated, Roland rescues Jake just before the lair explodes in a cascade of destruction.

In the movie’s concluding moments, Roland and Jake find themselves back on Earth, now restored to its former state. Roland extends an invitation for Jake to join him in Mid-World, recognizing that he has nowhere else to belong. With a sense of purpose and adventure ignited, Jake accepts the offer, and they step once more through the portal to their next chapter.
