In their desperate quest to flee the relentless harshness of life in Los Angeles, young couple Gensan and Ruby find themselves ensnared in an unending cycle of poverty and hardship. With Ruby’s fragile mental health preventing her from maintaining employment, Gensan works tirelessly at a fast-food restaurant to make ends meet. Despite Ruby’s intense desire to start a family, Gensan remains adamant in his decision against fatherhood.

Their lives fall apart when Gensan loses his job due to the restaurant’s closure, driving him to a life of desperation. He gets involved in an underground cockfighting ring, and as the stakes escalate, he resorts to an unthinkable act as he commits a brutal murder, triggering a series of catastrophic consequences.

At the same time, Ruby’s mental stability deteriorates further as she struggles to navigate her grim reality. In an impulsive act of madness, she kidnaps a neighbor’s infant daughter, Irene, leading them on a chaotic cross-country trip in search of a new beginning. Reluctantly, Gensan joins them, initially uncertain but ultimately swept up in their fractured family dynamic.

As they journey through the country, Ruby’s evident lack of maternal instincts raises alarms, forcing Gensan to grapple with his own morality while attempting to care for Irene. The tension peaks when they finally return to Gensan and Ruby’s childhood home in De Soto, Kansas, where a shocking family secret is unveiled: they are siblings.

Their uncle, Doug, discloses the dark truth about their abusive father, who met a grim fate in prison, leaving behind only an old shack to be divided between them. Believing that surrendering to the authorities is the only way to escape their downward spiral, Doug persuades Gensan to turn over Ruby and Irene.

However, as Gensan prepares to resolve their tumultuous situation, he makes a heart-wrenching discovery: Ruby has accidentally smothered Irene in an attempt to silence her, thinking the police were at the door. Overcome with anguish and despair, Gensan takes Ruby to a familiar field from their childhood and, in a tragic act of mercy, ends her life.

While Doug and the authorities await their arrival, Gensan buries both “mother and daughter” in the same field, unaware that the sound of approaching sirens is moments away, signaling the end of their harrowing journey.
