Lizzie is devastated after the tragic loss of her newborn daughter, Rosie, who perished in a hospital fire that claimed the lives of twelve mothers and babies. Now, seven years later, she struggles to navigate her grief while raising her son, Thomas, whom she shares custody of with her ex-husband, Mike.
During a birthday celebration for one of Thomas’s friends, Lizzie encounters a young girl who she instantly believes to be Rosie. Eager to connect, she befriends the girl’s parents, Claire and Bernard, by feigning interest in their house that is up for sale. As their sons bond, she discovers that the girl’s name is Lola.
Lizzie’s obsession with monitoring Lola deepens, causing her to lose sight of reality. This fixation leads to her job being compromised and forgetting to pick up Thomas. Concerned, Mike, along with Lizzie’s parents and therapist, confronts her, issuing a stern warning: he will seek full custody if Lizzie does not seek treatment. In a moment of desperation, she insists that she is convinced Rosie survived the fire and is actually Lola.
Determined to prove her theory, Lizzie attempts to collect DNA evidence. However, Claire is quick to realize that Lizzie has crossed a line, repeatedly instructing her to stay away. In a misguided effort to uncover the truth, Lizzie sneaks into their going-away party, only to get caught. She hides in Lola’s closet, and when she wakes, she tries to leave with Lola’s hairbrush for testing. Just as she’s about to escape, Claire spots her, leading to a chaotic struggle.
During this intense confrontation, Lizzie, desperate, implores Claire to end her life, declaring she will never stop pursuing the truth. Claire, overwhelmed with emotion, reveals that she saved Lola; her own baby died from smoke inhalation, and she found Lola with a deceased woman, presumed to be Lizzie. Bernard and the children overhear this harrowing confession. Lizzie finally shares this staggering revelation with Mike, who expresses his regret over the situation. Consequently, Claire is arrested on charges of child theft, kidnapping, and custodial interference.
In the aftermath, Lizzie is shown preparing for a visit with Lola, surrounded by her family. Thomas inquires about their future interactions with Lola, and Mike assures him they will gain clarity following Claire’s trial. As Bernard brings Lola in, a poignant moment unfolds—Claire exchanges a heartfelt glance with Lizzie from a distance, marking the beginning of Lola’s reunion with her biological family.
