The movie unfolds in a vibrant digital universe called “U,” where users can embrace their ideal selves. At the heart of this mesmerizing realm is a stunning pink-haired performer named Bell, who captivates her audience with her rendition of the hit song “U.” As she takes the stage, a magnificent flying whale glides above, casting an enchanting atmosphere over the adoring fans, who are spellbound by her ethereal voice. Conversely, we meet Suzu Naito, portrayed by [Kylie McNeill], an introverted teenager coping with her mundane existence in the real world.

In the shadows of her earlier years, Suzu was just another unseen face in the crowd, with only her friend Hiro Betsuyaku ([Jessica DiCicco]) to confide in. Her heart secretly yearns for childhood companion Shinobu Hisatake ([Manny Jacinto]), complicating their friendship with the arrival of Ruka Watanabe ([Hunter Schafer]), the glamorous queen bee of their school. Additionally, Kamishin stands as a solitary figure, trying unsuccessfully to recruit peers for his canoeing club.

A heart-wrenching flashback transports us to Suzu’s blissful childhood, filled with warmth from her mother ([Julie Nathanson]). Their bond is abruptly severed when her mother selflessly sacrifices her life to save another child from the treacherous stormy waters. This traumatic loss leaves Suzu burdened with resentment, particularly toward her mother’s noble choice, and she struggles with her inability to sing, a passion they once shared.

After a nudge from Hiro, Suzu ventures into U, stepping outside her comfort zone. Uncertain about her avatar’s appearance, she settles on a group photo from a gathering hosted by Ruka, but is surprised when the app appears to scan Ruka’s features instead. However, upon closer inspection, she discovers her digital alter ego, “Bell,” carries her own freckles. As Bell navigates the enchanting landscapes of U, she bursts into an unexpected song. Reactions vary from adoring fans to critics, but a small, angelic creature offers her encouragement. Logging out, Suzu is stunned to find her singing voice revived.

As Bell’s popularity skyrockets, amassing millions of followers in mere days, Suzu grapples with anxiety while seeking guidance from Hiro. Bell’s allure wins her a nickname, “Belle,” meaning “beautiful” in French. Meanwhile, Suzu’s relationship with Shinobu is hindered as she remains shy, believing he is attracted to Ruka.

The plot thickens as the formidable Dragon ([Paul Castro Jr]) emerges in U, captivating users with unprovoked attacks. A group of avatars, led by Justin ([Chace Crawford]), strives to capture him, yet their efforts tragically fail. The legend of The Dragon captures the imagination of Suzu and Hiro, as they begin investigating his true identity, linking him to the reclusive artist Jellinek ([Andrew Kishino]), whose tattoos bear an uncanny likeness to the Dragon’s markings.

Belle, determined and resourceful, manages to uncover the whereabouts of the Dragon’s castle but is met with resistance. As she attempts to assist, the Dragon turns her away, yet when her safety is threatened by Justin’s henchmen, he intervenes just in time to rescue her.

With time, Suzu imagines a way to reach the Dragon through melody. She pens a heartfelt song and sings it with Belle, bringing light into the Dragon’s guarded heart. Meanwhile, Ruka confides in Suzu, clarifying her feelings for Kamishin instead of Shinobu. Emboldened, Suzu facilitates their union, which ultimately deepens her friendships.

As Suzu discovers that Justin is wreaking havoc on the Dragon’s castle, she knows she must act. Alongside her companionship of Hiro, Shinobu, Ruka, and Kamishin, they delve into the truth of the Dragon’s identity. Their quest leads them to a young boy named Tomo, whose soulful singing resonates with Belle. However, it’s the revelation of Tomo’s protective brother, Kei, that reshapes Suzu’s understanding of the Dragon’s true nature.

Despite Kei’s initial wariness, Suzu bravely confronts challenges that arise as she advocates for Tomo and Kei against their abusive father. Through sheer determination, Suzu displays resilience, prompting the boys to recognize her strength and courage, reshaping her identity as a protector.

Upon her return, she is embraced by her father and friends, and as she finds confidence within her vocal talent, it feels like her mother watches over her with pride. Together, Suzu and her companions prepare to reclaim their voices, ready to embrace their passions with newfound purpose.
