Charlie finds himself in a precarious situation, leading him to reflect on the series of events that brought him to this moment. Meet Charlie Swift, a man who considers himself a concierge of sorts—a problem solver for powerful businessmen. His challenges escalate when he is tasked with finding a boy named Blade, who is supposed to carry out his first hit.
Upon locating Blade, Charlie notices the boy’s enthusiastic demeanor, which could be dangerous considering the nature of their work. The situation intensifies when they reach the target—a man named Rollo. As Blade delivers a cake to Rollo’s doorstep, Charlie grows anxious. His suspicions are confirmed when the cake explodes, resulting in Rollo’s decapitation. The request originated from a mysterious figure known as Beggar, who wanted Rollo dead.
To cover the mishap, Charlie devises a plan to convince Beggar that they have successfully killed Rollo. He seeks out Marcie Kramer, a talented taxidermist portrayed by Morena Baccarin, to help him identify the body. To make matters worse, Marcie confirms Rollo’s identity by recognizing a tattoo on his body.
As the story unfolds, Blade reveals his true intentions by turning against Charlie. Yet, his lack of gun skills leads to an accidental suicide, setting off a chain of chaotic events, including a fiery car explosion that destroys Rollo’s body. In a twist of desperation, Charlie beheads Blade and seeks Marcie’s assistance again to replicate the tattoo on Blade’s corpse, hoping to fool Beggar. Upon presenting the altered body, the deception works momentarily, allowing Charlie to regain Beggar’s trust.
Following these events, Charlie learns about Stan Mullen, the local kingpin portrayed by James Caan and a longtime friend he has known for 30 years. Stan is adverse to associating with Beggar, a ruthless man who operates outside the law. However, after an attack on his life and the casino, Charlie realizes the stakes have become incredibly high. On investigation, Charlie uncovers betrayal from one of Stan’s men, Benny.
As tensions escalate, Charlie seeks permission from Sal, the overarching boss of the mafia, to eliminate Beggar. However, Sal hesitates due to the implications of targeting new blood in the crime world. Pushed into a corner, Charlie starts investigating the reason behind Rollo’s hit and discovers that Rollo possessed crucial evidence that could incriminate Beggar. Here, Marcie becomes an ally, motivated by the promise of a $50,000 reward for her assistance.
As they delve deeper, they encounter The Freak, Beggar’s top henchman, complicating their quest. After multiple skirmishes, Charlie finally discovers the evidence Rollo had hidden, for which he continues to struggle against Beggar and his men. A dramatic confrontation leads to a decisive moment where Charlie outsmarts The Freak, securing the evidence disk proving Beggar’s double dealings with the FBI.
When everything comes to a head, Charlie confronts Beggar at a designated meeting spot, where he reveals that he has shown the evidence to Sal, thus gaining the upper hand. Following a melodramatic setup, Charlie ensures that Beggar meets his end courtesy of one of the casino’s bodyguards, Milt. In a twist of fate, he frees Marcie from Beggar’s control, solidifying their alliance.
The film concludes with Charlie engineering a safe future for Stan, symbolically using a deceased chauffeur’s identity to fake Stan’s death. In a poignant moment seated at a restaurant owned by Stan, Charlie grants his old friend a chance to live away from danger, demonstrating the length he will go for their enduring friendship. This bizarre journey spun around crime, loyalty, and survival leaves a lasting impression, fittingly accentuated by a panorama of unexpected twists and ethical quandaries.
