In the heart of the American Old West, we are introduced to the witty and charming gambler Bret Maverick (Mel Gibson), who narrates his own adventurous tale filled with unexpected twists as he strives to participate in a high-stakes five-card draw poker tournament aboard the paddle steamer Lauren Belle. With a hefty entry fee of $25,000, Maverick finds himself $3,000 short and embarks on a journey to collect the money owed to him.

As Maverick rides into the fictitious town of Crystal River, he encounters an array of colorful characters. Among them is the cunning poker player Angel (Alfred Molina), the beguiling and shrewd Mrs. Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster), and the esteemed lawman Marshal Zane Cooper (James Garner). Together, they share a stagecoach and face perilous challenges, including a near-fatal accident involving their elderly driver.

In a twist of fate, the trio decides to assist a wagon train of evangelical settlers who have fallen prey to nefarious outlaws. In exchange for their help, the settlers offer Maverick a slice of the much-needed funds for starting their mission, while a hopeful spinster missionary proposes marriage to Cooper. Both gentlemen graciously decline these offers, focusing instead on their shared objective.

Their journey takes a surprising turn when they are intercepted by a group of Indians led by Joseph (Graham Greene), who unbeknownst to the others, is a good friend of Maverick. Maverick allows himself to be “captured” by Joseph, hoping to collect the $1,000 debt owed to him. As the two plot together a scheme to trick a Russian Grand Duke, they prove that even in this lawless land, camaraderie and friendship remain valuable.

Meanwhile, Angel, seething with anger from a previous poker loss, receives a telegram ordering him to thwart Maverick’s progress to the prized tournament. After tracking him down, Angel assaults Maverick and attempts to execute him, but against all odds, Maverick escapes and pushes onward to the Lauren Belle.

As he arrives, Maverick finds the gorgeous Bransford still in need of funds, short by $4,000 herself. Spotting the Archduke on board, Maverick concocts a bold pretense, impersonating a Bureau of Indian Affairs agent to swindle the Archduke out of $6,000, ensuring both he and Bransford can enter the game.

The Commodore Duvall (James Coburn), organizer of the tournament and owner of the paddle boat, introduces the competitors amid a tense atmosphere where cheaters face dire consequences. As the stakes rise, Maverick finds himself at the final table alongside Bransford, Angel, and Duvall.

After a steamy encounter with Bransford in his quarters, Maverick narrowly makes it to the poker table just in time. The concluding showdown of the tournament is fraught with tension, as cards are dealt that could determine their fates. With skillful play and sheer luck, Maverick realizes an unbeatable royal flush, claiming the title as champion.

However, victory leads to a whirlwind of revelations: a betrayal by Cooper, a secret alliance between Duvall and Angel, and a tumultuous showdown with both. In a frantic chase to reclaim his winnings, Maverick proves not only to be a shrewd player but also a cunning strategist.

In a surprising denouement, Maverick and his father, Cooper, confront Bransford, who makes off with a portion of their prize money. Despite her theft, Maverick finds satisfaction in having hidden the majority of their winnings, hinting at a delightful rivalry as they plan to retrieve what is rightfully theirs.

With a smirk, Maverick relishes the thought, foreseeing the adventure that lies ahead.
