Joanna Mintz Stayton is a snobbish socialite who lives in luxury with her husband, Grant Stayton III. While their yacht is being repaired in the rough-and-tumble fishing village of Elk Cove, she hires Dean Proffitt, a widowed carpenter with four boisterous sons, to remodel her closet. Dean delivers solid craftsmanship, but Joanna dismisses his work because he used oak instead of cedar, a detail she never even asked for. When Dean refuses to redo the job for free, a heated argument erupts and she dramatically tosses him and his tool kit into the water.
That same night, trouble comes home to roiling tides as Joanna’s behavior meets its match. After a confrontation, the school principal threatens to involve social services over Dean’s undisciplined boys. Meanwhile, Grant begins to reap the consequences of Joanna’s absence: he hosts parties with younger women and lies that she has abandoned him. Then, in a dramatic turn, Joanna falls overboard from the yacht while retrieving her wedding ring and is rescued by a garbage scow. She is brought to a local hospital with temporary amnesia, though her ruthless arrogance stubbornly remains intact. Grant eventually learns the truth of what happened, and his plan to keep Joanna’s fortune grows more audacious.
When Dean sees Joanna’s story on the news, he hatches a plan to make her “pay off” her unpaid bill by doing things his way. He visits the hospital and claims she is his wife and the mother of his sons. Reluctantly, she returns with him to the ramshackle home she has never imagined. The transition is rough: she struggles with Dean’s rambunctious boys and the chaotic domestic life, but gradually she adapts. As she learns about the boys’ school troubles and the family’s finances, she discovers that Dean is secretly working two jobs to keep everyone afloat. With a practical eye, she streamlines the household budget and helps Dean become a more responsible father.
Joanna’s influence expands beyond finances as she helps transform Dean’s dream into reality: a miniature golf course designed around the family’s needs. Yet she keeps her true identity hidden, fearing that the moment she reveals herself, the new life she’s built might vanish. Two months pass, and Joanna’s mother Edith grows suspicious and threatens to bring Grant back into the picture. Grant is forced to retrieve Joanna, and it is only when memory returns—upon seeing him—that she realizes she was being manipulated. Realizing how content she was with Dean and his sons, she returns with Grant to the yacht, which heads toward New York with the crew and staff facing Edith’s sharp, undeserved mistreatment.
On board, Joanna’s changed heart becomes clear as Grant discovers she no longer loves him. Dean and the boys arrive on a Coast Guard cutter to rescue her, but they are diverted by a sighting of salmon poachers. Desperate, Dean runs to the stern and calls out to Joanna, then dives in to swim for her; she follows, and Andrew pushes Grant overboard in a fit of anger. Joanna finally reveals to Dean that the yacht and money belong to her, not Grant. The two are taken aboard the Coast Guard boat while Dean’s sons begin drafting their Christmas lists. In a moment of tenderness, Dean asks what he could give that Joanna doesn’t already have. She answers with a single, poignant line, and they seal their future with a kiss.
