Plot Summary

As Alex (Kathryn Newton) captures her younger brother Wyatt’s spirited football match on film, she invites her boyfriend Ben (Matt Shively) back to their residence to share the experience. The duo stumbles upon a peculiar discovery in their garden treehouse - Robbie, a neighbor’s child, is hiding out without explanation. With curiosity piqued, Alex transports Robbie back to his own home across the street. However, the tranquility of the evening is shattered when the sound of sirens echoes through the night, signaling an ambulance arrival at Robbie’s residence.

The next day, Robbie appears at the Newton household once more, this time as a temporary guest under their mother’s care. As Alex and her family navigate the intricacies of hosting an unexpected visitor, she begins to notice strange occurrences taking place around them. Wyatt and Robbie become fast friends, and their camaraderie is palpable as they engage in secret conversations with Robbie’s invisible companion.

As night falls, Ben and Alex join Wyatt in a dance party lit only by the glow of the Kinect camera. Meanwhile, Robbie sits comfortably on the sofa, his presence seemingly innocuous. However, when the lights go out, the camera captures an unusual movement beside him - something that will set off a chain reaction of bizarre events.

As the days pass, the Newton household becomes a hotbed of unexplained activity. Robbie and Wyatt engage in nocturnal chases through the house, pursuing a ghostly silhouette of a small child figure. Ben’s computer reveals that Robbie has been sneaking into Alex’s room at night, sleeping beside her while she’s unaware. The situation escalates when Robbie starts talking to the TV as if it were a conversational partner.

Furthermore, Wyatt wakes up one morning with a strange symbol etched onto his back - a mark eerily reminiscent of an ancient cult (first seen in Paranormal Activity 3). As Alex navigates the increasingly eerie atmosphere, she begins to uncover a web of mysteries that threaten to tear her family apart. The tension builds when, alone in the house, she hears unsettling noises and follows them to the hallway, where a chandelier falls from the ceiling, shattering on the floor.

As the days unfold, a sense of unease settles over Alex (character A), whose father attempts to shift the blame onto the light fitters for her growing disillusionment. However, she remains fixated on Robbie, sensing an ulterior motive behind his actions. The next day, Alex’s curiosity gets the better of her as she follows Robbie and Wyatt across the street to discover that Robbie’s mother, Katie Featherston (Katie), is unexpectedly at home. As Alex takes Wyatt back to his residence, he reveals to her that Katie had confided in him about the truth: like Robbie, he was adopted. This sparks a determination within Alex to uncover the truth from her parents, who remain tight-lipped on the subject.

Meanwhile, Wyatt’s interactions with an invisible figure raise more questions than answers, with Wyatt’s responses revealing a deep-seated uncertainty regarding his true identity. As Katie continues to visit Wyatt, whispering cryptic reassurances that she’ll be by his side until he’s “ready,” the air is thick with foreboding.

The evening brings a sense of unease as Alex finds herself suddenly suspended in mid-air, her world turned upside down. The following day, her mother’s solitary presence downstairs is disrupted by an eerie, unexplained noise. Katie materializes, and as Alex’s mother ventures upstairs, the unseen entity pounces, snatching her from the floor, leaving her lifeless.

Ben’s arrival at the house finds him met with an unsettling emptiness. His attempts to review footage in Alex’s bedroom are cut short when Katie appears, striking a deadly blow that silences him forever. As she turns her attention to Wyatt, revealing his true identity as Hunter, the stage is set for chaos.

Alex and her father return home, only to be met with a sense of unease. Her father becomes convinced he sees Alex’s mother strolling hand-in-hand with Wyatt toward Katie’s residence, prompting him to investigate further. Meanwhile, Alex discovers Ben’s lifeless body and flees the scene, racing to warn her father who is soon dragged away by an unseen force.

Her desperate search for her father’s whereabouts leads her to a distant bedroom where she ultimately finds herself face-to-face with Katie, her eyes blazing with malevolent fury. As Alex turns to flee, Wyatt awaits outside, but their potential escape route is swiftly blocked by an army of blank-faced individuals appearing in Katie’s garden. In the ensuing chaos, Alex is confronted by Katie once more, before the camera cuts out, leaving her fate hanging precariously in the balance.
