Plot Summary

As the clock struck 10 years ago, a pivotal moment unfolded in a hotel room where Nick stood alongside his father (Joel Gretsch). The elder’s words echoed through time as he imparted a cryptic prophecy: “Help her, help us all.” With an air of urgency, he wrapped his son in a tight embrace before unleashing a telekinetic force that sent Nick crashing through the wall. Just as the young boy struggled to regain composure, a team of agents, led by a seemingly innocuous hotel maid, burst into the room, overpowering Nick’s father. Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou), the mastermind behind the operation, strode in just as a mysterious energy ripped through, claiming the life of Nick’s father.

Fast-forward to 1945, and Cassie (Dakota Fanning) takes center stage as narrator. She paints a vivid picture of a world where psychic soldiers were conjured into existence by Hitler’s twisted experiments. Following World War II, other nations picked up the reins, harnessing the power of telepathy for their own gain. The mystical world of Watchers, Movers, Pushers, Bleeders, Stitches, Sniffs, Wipers, Shifters, and Shadows unfolded before Cassie, each with their unique abilities: Watchers glimpsed fleeting visions of the future; Movers manipulated physical objects and people with their minds; Pushers crafted reality through subtle suggestion; Bleeders unleashed sonic screams capable of shattering glass or devastating internal organs; Stitches reassembled or dismembered damaged tissue; Sniffs unraveled the history of any object; Wipers erased controlled amounts of memory; Shifters conjured illusions that retained approximate dimensions; and Shadows neutralized the effectiveness of other clairvoyants. Cassie’s own Watcher abilities had her witnessing glimpses of the future, only to find herself constantly dying as a result of experimental drug trials designed to boost their powers.

The present day finds us in a government facility where Kira (Camilla Belle) lies motionless on an operating table, a mysterious substance coursing through her veins under the watchful eye of Henry Carver. The girl’s sudden revival and daring escape, facilitated by a glass marble that thwarted closing doors, left Carver and his Mover counterpart, Victor (Neil Jackson), stunned. Kira’s survival was no anomaly; she had also managed to pilfer a vial of the potent drug, its potential consequences hanging precariously in the balance.

As we fast-forward to the present, Nick has grown into a skilled Mover, though his lack of control led him to lose a high-stakes dice game, leaving him indebted to the tune of $6,000. The arrival of Mack and Holden, two Sniffer agents from Division, brought news that many Americans with powers had fled to Hong Kong in an attempt to evade their grasp. As they began sniffing out a trail leading back to Kira, Nick was left with a stark warning: stay out of trouble.

As Cassie (character name not provided) steps into Nick’s apartment, an unprecedented meeting unfolds between two individuals who have never crossed paths before. Her tale begins with a tantalizing mystery surrounding $6 million, which piques Nick’s interest and sparks their conversation. As they delve deeper, Cassie confides in Nick about her mother’s abduction by the enigmatic Division, leaving him stunned and intrigued.

The atmosphere shifts abruptly as the sounds of chaos fill the air, courtesy of the Pop family - a notorious organized crime syndicate with extraordinary abilities. The Watcher Xiao Lu Li (Pop Girl), accompanied by her Bleeder brothers, launches a surprise attack on Nick and Cassie. With bullets whizzing around them, Nick seizes the opportunity to skillfully maneuver Cassie out of harm’s way.

Pop Girl’s prophetic vision of Kira sitting on a bench, slowly fading away, momentarily halts the onslaught. She implores her brothers to cease their pursuit, warning that killing Nick would mean sacrificing the elusive Kira - whose fate was inextricably linked with his. This tense standoff subsides, allowing our protagonists to reassess their precarious situation.

Meanwhile, Kira awakens on a distant boat, where she encounters a mystifying Chinese fisherman with an unsettling affinity for long fingernails. As she gazes into the mirror, she discovers cryptic messages - “4100” and “Nick” - scrawled in her own handwriting, further entwining their destinies.

As Cassie navigates Nick through Teresa, a skilled Stitch, the latter reveals that she was forewarned by Cassie’s mother to provide assistance. With Teresa’s expert care, Nick recovers from his ordeal. Cassie presents him with a symbol of hope - a flower - which resonates deeply with her words and echoes Nick’s father’s long-ago counsel.

The pursuit of Kira intensifies as Mack and Holden converge on her location. However, their mission is hijacked when Kira manipulates Mack into believing that Holden is responsible for the death of his brother. The distraught Mack unleashes a fatal bullet, allowing Kira to escape the chaos.

Carver seizes this opportunity to Push Mack, ultimately compelling him to take his own life. As Nick and Cassie venture into the heart of a seedy club, they seek the expertise of ex-Division agent Hook Waters (a Shifter). Their meeting yields valuable insights: Hook confirms that a Sniffer named Emily can aid them in tracking down their quarry.

With the fake bead in hand, Nick and Cassie visit Emily. The astute Sniffer scrutinizes the counterfeit and reveals its identical counterpart - a real bead that had broken off Kira’s bracelet during her tumultuous confrontation with Mack. This revelation exposes Carver’s sinister plan to disseminate these beads among Sniffers across the nation, casting a dark shadow over their investigation.

As Emily leads them to the pier, Nick’s world is rocked by the sudden appearance of Kira, his ex-girlfriend from a life of cons on Coney Island. But this reunion is tainted by the revelation that she’s had her memory wiped to escape the grasp of Division, the shadowy organization that once bound them together. Cassie, ever the pragmatist, sees the writing on the wall and urges Nick to abandon Kira, warning that she’s altering the future for the worse. However, Nick is torn between his loyalty to Cassie and his lingering feelings for Kira.

As tensions simmer, Nick reaches out to Pinky, a mysterious figure with ties to the Shadow, seeking his help in hiding Kira from the Sniffers, a ruthless group determined to capture her. Meanwhile, Cassie’s own investigations lead her to uncover a cryptic drawing that foretells a grim fate for herself, Nick, and her mother. Faced with this impending doom, Cassie begins to question whether Kira is indeed worth the risk.

As the stakes escalate, Nick finds himself at a crossroads, forced to choose between his allegiances and his sense of morality. His decision sets in motion a chain of events that will have far-reaching consequences for all involved.

As Nick and his companions arrive at the waterfront, they encounter the same elderly individual who had earlier facilitated the erasure of Kira’s memories. The old man reveals that a woman had paid for Kira’s mind-wipe five years prior. With the money provided by Carver to Pinky, Nick negotiates with the old man to erase the last two hours from his own recollection and subsequently read a mysterious red envelope. As the memory-erasure takes effect, Pop Girl loses her connection and is left stunned.

Meanwhile, Hook navigates the security perimeter at the Shadowed building, using his Shifted credentials to gain access. He ascends to the top floor, where an elderly woman greets him with a gun. Acknowledging her role in securing the case, Hook assures her that their mission has been accomplished and that she had fulfilled her assignment effectively. The old woman, actually a pawn of Kira’s plan, had been stationed at the building by Kira to conceal the case from Division. With the case safely retrieved, Hook returns to the room where Cassie and Emily are waiting, and creates an identical replica of the Division case using a red suitcase. Cassie takes possession of the case, exiting the room shortly thereafter.

As Nick’s memory is wiped, he awakens in the same boat where Kira had earlier found herself. He opens his envelope to discover the enigmatic message “go home.” However, upon arriving at his destination, Teresa attacks him, having been dispatched by the Pop family. The Bleeder brothers proceed to deliver the case to their father.

Simultaneously, Cassie finds Nick and is instructed by him to flee in a random direction, thereby evading any Watcher surveillance. Despite Nick’s efforts, Pop Girl still manages to track her down. The Pop family patriarch discovers the case with its contents shifted to resemble a syringe filled with Soy Sauce.

Carver reveals to Kira that she had once been an agent, but something went awry when she received the injection. Cassie is subsequently pursued by Pop Girl, only for the Chinese man to intervene and erase her memories. He then discloses that Cassie’s mother had paid for Kira’s memory wipe five years prior.

Nick contacts Carver, requesting permission to handle the drug on Kira’s behalf. Upon arriving at their quarters, he finds Kira dressed in an agent’s attire, revealing that their relationship was fabricated. She and Carver coerce Nick into leading them to the location of the case, only for the Pop family to arrive and initiate a struggle for possession. As chaos erupts, Nick confesses to Kira that her memories of being an agent were merely a manufactured Push. In response, Carver attempts to manipulate Nick’s actions, urging him to jump from the building. However, Nick injects himself with the drug and appears to succumb to his injuries. Kira and Carver depart the scene, leaving Nick behind.

As the narrative unfolds, Cassie (character) arrives on the scene, her frustration palpable as she confronts Nick, who is currently under the influence of a rather unusual substance - soy sauce. It becomes apparent that she had secretly stashed the crucial case in a nearby dumpster, cleverly hidden from prying eyes.

Nick’s inquires regarding Cassie’s mother are met with a revelation: “probably since before I was born” - a telling indication that her mother’s actions were part of a grand scheme to orchestrate the events that would ultimately lead to Kira’s escape. It becomes clear that every pivotal moment in the story was meticulously planned and manipulated by Cassie’s mother, with the ultimate goal of setting the stage for Kira’s freedom.

Meanwhile, Carver (character) slumbers fitfully on a plane bound for the United States, while Kira sits beside him, her concerns etched across her face. As she rummages through her purse, her fingers stumble upon a crimson envelope, its contents holding a profound significance. The memories of Nick’s enigmatic warning - “open it when you begin to doubt the truth” - resurface, prompting Kira to tear open the envelope.

Her eyes widen in shock as she beholds a photograph from their past, featuring a younger Nick and herself beaming together at Coney Island’s iconic entrance. The image is accompanied by an ominous message: “Kill him. See you soon. Nick.” Kira’s gaze narrows, her focus shifting to Carver, whose own eyes snap open as she utters the chilling command, “put your gun in your mouth. Pull the trigger.” The screen fades to black, leaving the audience on tenterhooks, awaiting the next development in this gripping narrative.
