Plot Summary

As the night wears on in one of Barcelona’s most bustling fire stations, TV reporter Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) and her cameraman Pablo (Pablo Rosso) are on the job, chronicling the action for their documentary series Mientras ustedes duermen (While You Sleep). When a distress call arrives from an apartment building, they leap into action alongside firefighters Manu (Ferrán Terraza) and Álex (David Vert). As the police attempt to apprehend the trapped woman, things take a dark turn: she becomes feral, biting one of the officers in a display of ferocity. Meanwhile, the frightened residents gather at the entrance hall, watching in horror as the authorities seal off the building. The tension escalates further when a firefighter is attacked and tossed down the stairs, only to be followed by a wave of violence as the camera crew, remaining cop Jorge Yaman, and the second firefighter are set upon. Amidst the chaos, Ángela’s keen journalistic instincts lead her to capture crucial footage, including a moment that will leave viewers reeling: the apparent demise of the old lady at the hands of the police, confirmed by Ángela herself as she rewinds and replays the tape. Trapped alongside the residents, Ángela continues to record, defying pressure from the authorities, even as she finds herself drawn into a poignant interview with young Jennifer (Claudia Silva), whose parents are struggling to cope with their daughter’s mysterious illness - and her dog Max, who has been sent to the vet due to his own peculiar symptoms. As the situation spirals further out of control, Ángela’s crew is forced to confront the unsettling reality that they may never escape the confines of this besieged building.

As the hazmat-suited health inspector cautiously approaches the chaos, the injured individuals, wracked with agony, suddenly transform into snarling beasts, their critical conditions momentarily forgotten. The inspector’s words are laced with gravity as they reveal that the incubation period of this mysterious disease is determined by blood type - a fact that will soon take on ominous significance. With a somber tone, the health inspector recounts the tale of a dog infected with the virus, which had attacked and slaughtered other pets at the local veterinary clinic before being humanely put down. The trail leads back to the apartment building, where Jennifer, the dog’s distraught owner, suddenly turns on her mother in a violent outburst.

As panic spreads throughout the building, the inspector delivers a dire warning: this unknown pathogen is spreading rapidly, metamorphosing its victims into bloodthirsty savages. Ángela and Pablo are forced to fight for their lives as more and more residents succumb to the infection. The once-peaceful hallways are now battlegrounds, with the duo struggling to survive amidst the growing chaos.

As bodies pile up and the dead begin to vanish, Ángela and Pablo discover that some of the presumed corpses have actually survived - and are now relentlessly pursuing them through the shadows. Their only hope for escape lies in a hidden key, said to be located on the third floor in a resident’s apartment. But with every passing moment, the stakes grow higher, and the duo must navigate the treacherous landscape to uncover the truth and find a way out of the building before it’s too late.

As the duo, Ángela (character) and Pablo (character), stumble upon the penthouse, they’re met with an eerie silence - a stark contrast to the chaos that had consumed the city. The few remaining infected, driven by some primal urge, push them upwards, forcing an unwanted ascent into the heart of the luxurious abode. Here, they discover the remnants of a Vatican agent’s ill-fated research into demonic possession, which had taken on a life of its own. A gruesome finding: the suspected virus, once thought to be merely theoretical, had evolved into a deadly contagion. As if drawn by an unseen force, Pablo’s gaze falls upon the attic door, and he uses his camera to illuminate the darkness within. The sudden snap of something lurking in the shadows shatters the light, prompting Pablo to switch to night vision. This new perspective reveals the sealed door referenced earlier on the audio tape, a grim reminder of the agent’s failed attempts to cure a young girl thought to be possessed. The once hopeful endeavor had devolved into a desperate attempt at containment. In this forsaken space, the emaciated figure of the possessed girl stirs, oblivious to Ángela and Pablo’s presence. As Pablo tries to make a hasty exit, his footwork falters, leaving him defenseless against the girl’s merciless assault. The camera slips from Pablo’s grasp, and Ángela, in a desperate bid for escape, is met with misfortune - her own trip and fall. The device continues to capture the horrors unfolding before it as Ángela’s terrified screams mingle with the possessed girl’s unearthly wails, fading into the darkness as she’s dragged away, vanishing from view.
