In Brazil, a multitude of exotic birds is illegally exported, leading to a fateful encounter in Moose Lake, Minnesota. A young girl named Linda Gunderson discovers a fallen crate containing a male blue macaw hatchling, whom she affectionately names Blu. Fast forward fifteen years: Linda now owns a quaint bookstore while Blu has grown into a highly domesticated bird, often mocked by the local Canada Geese for his inability to fly.
One day, ornithologist Túlio Monteiro approaches Blu and Linda with an enticing proposition: to travel to Rio de Janeiro, where Blu, the last male of his species, has a chance to mate with a female macaw. Eager for adventure, Linda agrees and the duo embarks on a journey to Rio, where Blu makes new friends, including a spirited Red-crested Cardinal named Pedro and a lively Yellow Canary named Nico. Upon arrival at Túlio’s aviary, Blu meets the fierce yet independent jewel of the macaw world, Jewel, who dreams of escaping into the wild.
As fate would have it, Blu and Jewel find themselves in the clutches of Fernando, an orphan boy, and a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo named Nigel. They all work for Marcel, a smuggler with plans to profit from Blu and Jewel’s capture. When Fernando has second thoughts about the smuggling, Nigel, driven by vengeance after losing a television role, insists on their plight. In a twist, the timid Blu and the fiery Jewel make a daring escape into the jungle. Fernando, along with Linda and Túlio, pursues them, determined to bring the macaws back home.
In the wild, Blu and Jewel encounter Rafael, a Toco Toucan, who introduces them to his bulldog buddy, Luiz, who can help free them from their chains. Under Rafael’s guidance, Blu attempts to learn to fly. However, their journey is not without peril as a gang of mischievous marmosets, hired by Nigel, suddenly threaten their newfound freedom. In a celebratory Rio-style dance party, Blu and Jewel’s bond deepens even as they fend off their pursuers.
The action intensifies when Pedro and Nico see Nigel capturing Jewel. Upon hearing this, Blu and Rafael rush to the Rio Carnival, a vibrant setting that also serves as cover for the smugglers. With the help of Linda and Túlio, who don costumes to blend into the festive crowd, they stage a rescue. In a series of chaotic moments, Nigel captures Blu, but the clever bird manages to use a fire extinguisher to break free and release his fellow captives.
In a dramatic showdown, Blu’s bravery shines through as he saves Jewel from a perilous plunge after Nigel injures her mid-flight. Finally, Blu discovers his hidden ability to fly, swooping down to rescue Jewel, leading them both back to safety and sparking a new life together. In the aftermath, Linda and Túlio adopt the young boy Fernando and establish a sanctuary to protect the jungle from further smuggling threats.
Ultimately, Blu and Jewel find joy in raising their three offspring, while Nigel faces his own humiliating downfall and the smugglers are brought to justice, bringing a triumphant close to their adventure.
