Stand Up Guys 2012

As Val steps out into the bright morning light, he’s met with the warm embrace of his old friend Doc, who whisks him away to his apartment. Under the guise of small talk, Doc’s eyes betray a calculating gaze as he contemplates taking aim at his former cellmate. But Val’s enthusiasm for a night on the town proves too enticing, and Doc’s finger hesitates on the trigger. Instead, they hit up a local brothel, where Doc arranges a tryst with a beautiful woman. However, Val’s inability to follow through sparks a chain reaction of events that sets them off on a wild goose chase.

As the night wears on, Doc and Val break into a pharmacy, emerging with a stash of prescription pills and a few “boner pills” for good measure. Doc’s troubles are compounded when he receives a chilling phone call from a mysterious figure demanding his attention by 10 am the next day. Meanwhile, Val finds himself unable to resist the charms of the same prostitute multiple times, only to find solace in the slow dance with a young woman at a local bar.

As the night wears on and the clock ticks closer to dawn, Doc’s demons come flooding back as he contemplates his own mortality. He takes Val to a hospital, where the nurse, none other than Hirsch’s daughter, tends to Val’s…ahem…unique situation. After a doctor extracts some blood from Val’s penis, the two friends head out to grab some midnight munchies at a local eatery, where they encounter Alex once again.

Over plates of greasy diner fare, Doc reveals his troubled past to Val, confessing that he was ordered to take out his old friend 28 years prior. With only nine hours left on the clock, the duo ponders their options for staying one step ahead of the hitman. They steal a sleek muscle car and pay a visit to Hirsch’s nursing home, where they hatch a plan to spring their friend from captivity.

As they make their escape, the trio finds themselves in hot pursuit by the authorities. Hirsch takes the wheel, leading them on a high-speed chase that culminates in a daring heist at a local brothel. With their new companion, a freed and furious woman, they return to the restaurant for another round of revelry with Alex.

As the night draws to a close, Doc, Val, and their newfound friend find themselves speeding away from the chaos, the sound of sirens growing fainter in the distance.

As Sylvia recounts her harrowing ordeal at the hands of four thugs, who brutally beat her and left her for dead in a warehouse trunk, Val and Doc decide to take matters into their own hands. They accompany Sylvia to the scene of the crime, determined to mete out justice to those responsible. Upon arriving at the warehouse, they find the perpetrators and, without hesitation, dispatch two of them and subdue the remaining pair. Calling in the authorities to apprehend the culprits, Val and Doc then leave Sylvia to exact her own brand of retribution with a baseball bat.

However, their brief moment of vengeance is short-lived, as they soon discover that Hirsch, one of their companions, has succumbed to natural causes while they were away. With a heavy heart, Val and Doc attend the hospital where they learn of Hirsch’s passing and make arrangements for his dignified burial in the family plot at the local cemetery.

As the clock ticks closer to the fateful hour when Doc is duty-bound to eliminate Val, the pair decide to take a brief respite from their impending doom and enjoy a meal together at their favorite restaurant. It is here that they once again encounter Alex, whose innocent smile belies her connection to Doc - a family tie that neither of them has revealed to the other.

Meanwhile, Doc makes a desperate plea to his mob boss patron, begging for mercy on Val’s behalf and warning that any harm coming to him will have catastrophic consequences. The mob boss responds with an ominous threat: should Doc fail to eliminate Val, he will exact a terrible revenge upon Alex. Fearing for her safety, Doc leaves behind a cryptic message and a key, entrusting it all to Alex.

In a moment of introspection, Val seeks out a local church where he confesses his sins - both great and small - to a listening priest. The weight of his transgressions bears down upon him as he acknowledges the good deeds he has done in the face of adversity.

As the hours tick by, Val and Doc find themselves in need of new attire, which they procure through a daring haberdashery heist. However, their joy is short-lived, as two henchmen from the mob arrive to dispatch them. In a tense standoff, Val and Doc manage to eliminate one attacker and send the other fleeing for cover.

As the clock strikes 10, Doc delivers his solemn warning: “It’s time.” Little does he know that Alex has been secretly privy to their plans all along, having received a mysterious phone call from an unknown figure directing her to uncover a hidden cache of cash in a shoebox - a revelation that shatters her understanding of her grandfather and the world around her.

With their time running out, Val and Doc make one final stand against the mob, marching resolutely towards the hideout of their nemesis with guns blazing.
