Plot Summary

The curtain opens on Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae), their morning after a night of passion, gradually unfolding into a tender connection that blossoms into a relationship. Fast-forward four years, and the couple finds themselves locked in a perpetual cycle of bickering, their petty disagreements escalating to comical heights. The tension is palpable as they arrive at a dinner party for friends Bobby (Jaren Mitchell) and Reya (Betsy Borrego), where another argument finally pushes them to the breaking point. In a sudden epiphany, they conclude that their relationship has reached a dead end and decide to go their separate ways.

Just moments after this emotional reckoning, chaos erupts as a mysterious cyclist (Nicholas X. Parsons) collides with their car, leaving them shaken and disoriented. As the man rides away on his bike, Leilani seizes the opportunity to retrieve his phone, only for another individual, claiming to be a law enforcement officer (Paul Sparks), to take control of the situation. This self-proclaimed cop commandeers their vehicle, embarking on a high-stakes chase that culminates in a violent confrontation in an alleyway. The reality of the situation begins to sink in as they discover the cyclist’s true nature: a mere mortal, brutally run over multiple times before meeting his untimely demise.

As they sit stunned amidst the gruesome scene, a hipster couple strolls by, their Instagram-worthy moment momentarily forgotten in the face of the macabre discovery. The authorities are subsequently alerted, and Jibran and Leilani are forced to flee the area. Seeking solace at a local diner, they attempt to concoct an alibi for their presence at the crime scene, only to be foiled by Detective Martin’s (Andrene Ward-Hammond) persistence. As Leilani’s phone is accidentally submerged in a milkshake, the couple realizes they are now squarely in the crosshairs of the law.

In a last-ditch effort to clear their names and restore their reputations, Leilani proposes that they take matters into their own hands and investigate the murder themselves. Their first lead is a cryptic message from an enigmatic figure named Edie, inviting them to meet at the notorious Dragon’s Den club, where the boundaries between reality and the unknown are sure to blur.

As Jibran and Leilani arrive at the club, they’re directed to meet Edie on the balcony, where they find her (Anna Camp) waiting for them. But Edie’s not alone in her suspicions - she’s convinced that Jibran and Leilani are pawns in a larger game, hired by the enigmatic figure known only as “Bicycle” (whose real name is Tom, it later becomes clear). Despite their protests of innocence, Edie has them subdued and brought to her home’s stable, where they’re tied up to chairs like prize-winning ponies. Her accusations are based on a set of incriminating photos, which she believes Jibran and Leilani possess. The dynamic duo insists they know nothing about these photographs or their connection to Edie’s husband Brett (Kyle Bornheimer), but her threats - either a scalding hot bacon grease bath or whatever lurks behind the barn door - are enough to send them scrambling for a way out.

In a bold move, Jibran decides to take a chance and opt for the mystery behind the door. He’s met with a rather unexpected welcome: a horse who delivers a square-to-the-chest kick that sends him reeling. Meanwhile, Leilani takes Edie up on her original offer, opting for the bacon grease instead. But as Jibran gazes at his own reflection, Leilani seizes the opportunity to flip the script - she dumps the hot grease onto Brett, while Jibran launches a fierce attack on Edie. He snatches a piece of paper from the floor and uses it to fend off their attackers before making a swift exit with Leilani by his side.

As they regroup at a local store to swap out their clothes, now stained with Bicycle’s blood, Jibran and Leilani can’t help but reminisce about a disastrous date they witnessed on their own first outing. The clue from the paper Jibran grabbed earlier provides the key to unlocking the mystery, leading them to the doorstep of a rowdy fraternity house where a group of frat boys are engaged in some shady envelope-stuffing activity. They attempt to snag one of these envelopes but find themselves caught by Steve (Moses Storm), one of the partygoers. Jibran takes him down in a fight, while Leilani manages to subdue the rest of the crew.

As they force Steve to spill the beans about their employer’s true identity, he reveals that Bicycle is the mastermind behind the operation - but before they can make sense of this revelation, the killer known only as “Mustache” begins taking out the frat boys one by one. Steve meets his maker in a gruesome manner, and Jibran and Leilani find themselves hiding in a closet as Mustache delivers a chilling monologue to an unseen employer. When the coast is clear, they grab an envelope containing incriminating photos and make their escape through the fire escape, leaving the mayhem behind.

As Jibran and Leilani converged on Bobby and Reya’s dinner party, their minds were preoccupied with the enigmatic Tom. Their arrival, disguised as post-boxing enthusiasts, was a ruse to facilitate an introduction to Leilani’s IT coworker Keith (Mahdi Cocci), whose presence had piqued Jibran’s jealousy. Under the guise of socializing, Jibran engaged Keith in conversation, while Leilani confided in Reya about her recent breakup with Jibran and her burgeoning feelings for Bobby. However, Reya tempered Leilani’s optimism by revealing their own relationship woes.

Meanwhile, Jibran covertly observed Keith as he unlocked his phone, uncovering an exclusive invitation to a mysterious event. The couple hastened to transform themselves, borrowing attire from their hosts before departing. Their destination proved to be the Sanctarium cult’s masked gathering, where they mingled in the shadows alongside Edie and Brett.

As the evening unfolded, Jibran and Leilani bore witness to a series of members summoned to participate in an orgy, only for the ritual to be disrupted by the cult leaders’ announcement of imminent police arrival and the presence of impostors. The couple’s cover was blown, but before they could be apprehended, law enforcement stormed the premises, taking Jibran and Leilani into custody.

In the interrogation room, the pair exchanged candid revelations about their past, including Leilani’s discovery of Jibran’s unfinished documentary, which she found promising despite his initial hesitation to share it with her. Detective Martin arrived, exonerating them from suspicion in the murders due to traffic camera footage capturing the crime scene. As they recounted their experience to the detective, he revealed that they had inadvertently played a crucial role in taking down the Sanctarium cult, a mission the authorities had been pursuing for some time. With their involvement vindicated, Martin granted them permission to return home and provide formal statements the following morning.

As the dubious duo, Jibran (actor name) and Leilani, are being whisked away from the chaos they’ve created, they’re unwittingly at the mercy of Mustache, a self-proclaimed law enforcement officer with a questionable moral compass. His true allegiance is soon revealed: he’s been bought off by Sanctarium to ensure their nefarious activities remain under the radar of the authorities. With sinister intentions, Mustache has other plans in store for the pair - a gruesome demise, courtesy of a secluded waterfront location. He navigates them to the docks, securing Jibran and Leilani to a boat with unyielding ties, but the cunning Leilani seizes the opportunity to break free and wrestle control of Mustache’s weapon away from him.

The would-be executioner finds himself in a precarious position, struggling to maintain his grip on Jibran as he taunts Leilani, daring her to take aim. The tension builds as the pair engages in a heated debate, their words laced with venomous intent. However, it’s Leilani who ultimately takes control, landing a precise shot that sends Mustache tumbling into the water.

As the authorities arrive on the scene, Jibran and Leilani receive medical attention while Mustache is taken into custody. In a bizarre twist of fate, the couple decides to put their differences aside and indulge in a passionate tryst within the confines of an ambulance - a peculiar yet fitting climax to their ordeal.

Fast-forward one year, and Jibran and Leilani have decided to embark on a new adventure, signing up for the thrilling competition known as “The Amazing Race.” As they prepare to face the challenges ahead, they’re shocked to discover that one of the obstacles involves an equine participant - a prospect that fills them with dread.
