What two submarines go missing at the beginning of the film?

Plot Summary

As a sense of unease settles over the global community, two ballistic-missile submarines from Britain and the Soviet Union vanish without warning. In response, MI6 agent 007 (James Bond) is hastily summoned to investigate the mystery disappearance. En route to his briefing, Bond finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse as he outwits and defeats a team of Soviet agents in a daring downhill ski chase that leaves one operative dead on the slopes. With the stakes escalating, Bond’s mission takes him to Egypt, where he encounters Major Anya Amasova (KGB agent Triple X), a formidable adversary also vying for control of highly advanced submarine tracking technology being peddled by a shadowy organization.

As Bond and Amasova navigate the treacherous landscape of espionage and deception, they cross paths with Jaws, a towering assassin with an arsenal of razor-sharp steel teeth. Initially, their rivalry is marked by a series of tense confrontations and clever escapes, but as they find themselves working together to uncover the truth behind the vanishing submarines, their mutual distrust gradually gives way to a tentative alliance. The unlikely duo’s truce is sealed when their respective superiors in Britain and the Soviet Union agree to put aside their differences and collaborate on the investigation.

As Bond and Amasova delve deeper into the mystery, they uncover evidence linking the missing submarines to reclusive scientist and shipping tycoon Karl Stromberg, a man with a penchant for secrecy and an obsession with the ocean. Their investigation takes them on a thrilling journey across Egypt, where they must navigate treacherous markets and dodgy characters to get closer to the truth.

In Sardinia, Bond and Amasova pose as a marine biologist and his wife, infiltrating Stromberg’s heavily guarded base and uncovering secrets about his mysterious new supertanker, Liparus. The ship, launched nine months prior, has been shrouded in secrecy, sparking speculation about its true purpose. As they prepare to leave the base, Bond and Amasova are pursued by a trio of ruthless henchmen: Jaws, Naomi, an assistant/pilot with ties to Stromberg’s operation; and a henchman riding a motorcycle equipped with a rocket sidecar.

In a heart-pumping sequence that showcases Bond’s quick thinking and cunning, the duo escapes their pursuers by converting Bond’s Lotus Esprit into a submarine. In the process, they manage to take out Naomi, who meets a fiery demise when Bond fires a sea-air missile from his car, destroying her helicopter. The mission takes a personal turn when Amasova discovers that Bond is responsible for the death of her lover, Sergei Barsov, revealed in the film’s opening scenes. Seething with anger and a desire for revenge, she vows to eliminate Bond as soon as their mission is complete.

Throughout the investigation, Bond and Amasova find themselves navigating treacherous waters, where allegiances are tested and loyalties are tried. As they delve deeper into the mystery of the vanishing submarines, they must confront their own demons and make difficult choices about whom to trust in a world where nothing is as it seems.

As Bond and Amasova board the USS Wayne, a cutting-edge American submarine, they’re met with an unsettling discovery - the vessel is hijacked by Liparus, a clandestine tanker masquerading as a floating submarine dock. This cunning ruse is orchestrated by Stromberg, whose diabolical plan unfolds like a ticking time bomb: simultaneously launching nuclear missiles from commandeered British and Soviet submarines to devastatingly target Moscow and New York City. The catastrophic aftermath would ignite a global nuclear war, allowing Stromberg to escape in his underwater lair, Atlantis, and establish a new civilization amidst the ruins.

As the situation spirals out of control, Bond manages to slip away from Stromberg’s clutches and frees the captured sailors from both British and Russian subs. United against their captors, they valiantly battle Liparus’ crew before breaching the control room. There, they learn from a dying captain that the primed missiles are mere minutes away from launching a catastrophic barrage. Bond seizes the opportunity to outmaneuver Stromberg’s plan by tricking the submarines into firing their nuclear payloads at each other, effectively destroying the subs and their crews. With Liparus sinking beneath the waves, the victorious sailors escape on the USS Wayne.

As the dust settles, Bond is ordered by the Pentagon to eliminate Atlantis, but he insists on rescuing Amasova first. In a tense confrontation, he dispatches Stromberg before facing off against Jaws once more - this time, dropping him into a shark tank. However, Jaws proves resilient and escapes, having dispatched the tiger shark in the process.

As Atlantis meets its demise beneath the torpedoes’ assault, Bond and Amasova flee on an escape pod, only for Amasova to retrieve Bond’s gun and raise it against him. Yet, she ultimately chooses compassion over elimination, embracing Bond instead. The Royal Navy recovers their pod, and as they’re pulled aboard through the port window, their superiors gaze upon the two spies in a tender embrace, oblivious to the high-stakes drama that has unfolded beneath the waves.
