Many years after the legendary adventures of Princess Twilight Sparkle, the world of Equestria has transformed into a fully three-dimensional land, where various breeds of ponies, including Earth ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi, live in isolation from one another. The tales of Twilight and the Mane 6 have become mere folklore, with magic now considered a myth. Unfortunately, this has fostered a belief among ponies that each other poses a threat.
In this world of skepticism, an orange Earth pony, Sunny Starscout, holds onto the hope that the old legends are true, inspired by her father’s stories. Aspiring to prove the existence of magic, she creates a homemade poster inviting all to the seaside town of Maritime Bay. As time passes after her father’s death, Sunny and her friends, Sprout Cloverleaf and Hitch Trailblazer, come of age. Hitch has now become the Sheriff of Maritime Bay, with Sprout serving as Deputy. However, tensions arise as Sprout’s mother, Phyllis Cloverleaf, runs a security company named “Canterlogic,” which stirs animosity against non-Earth ponies.
Despite Sunny’s unwavering determination to mend the rift within Equestria, her friends remain skeptical. The situation escalates when a curious unicorn, Izzy Moonbow, unexpectedly appears in Maritime Bay. After Sunny rescues her from arrest by Hitch and Sprout, they make their escape. Meanwhile, Sprout, consumed by jealousy, assumes control and starts rallying the citizens against non-Earth ponies, fabricating a sinister plan by constructing a menacing mechanical war machine called the “Sproutous Maximus.” He gradually morphs into a tyrant, driven by a thirst for power.
Sunny and Izzy embark on a quest to discover if magic still exists. Although Izzy informs Sunny that unicorns have been devoid of magic for generations, their journey leads them to the glimmering city of Zephyr Heights, where they encounter Queen Haven. Captured and imprisoned, they meet Princess Pipp Petals, a social media star. In a twist, Zipp Storm, Queen Haven’s older daughter who is also an eccentric scientist, rescues them and unveils that royal pegasi merely simulate flying with wires.
Together, they hatch a plan to reclaim a magical crystal embedded in Queen Haven’s crown. Under the cover of a concert featuring Pipp’s hit song “Glowin’ Up,” Sunny, Izzy, and Zipp attempt to replace the crown with a fake, but chaos ensues when Hitch, disguised as a Pegasus, loses his facade, exposing their secret.
Following their escape, the group camps under the stars, during which Izzy shares the significance of the invitation poster she made with Sunny’s father. Their adventure continues as they navigate to Bridlewood Forest, the domain of unicorns. To obtain another crystal, Sunny faces Alphabittle in a dance-off, winning the prized artifact despite losing her disguise.
As tensions peak, they cross paths with Queen Haven once more during a skirmish, trying to harness the crystals’ power to restore magic to Equestria. In a devastating turn of events, Sunny and Hitch confront Sprout and his destructive Sproutous Maximus machine. In their struggle, they unintentionally tear down both Sprout’s creation and Sunny’s home, though Sprout escapes unscathed.
With unwavering unity, Sunny and her friends finally reassemble the crystals, reigniting magic in Equestria and catalyzing Sunny’s transformation into a beautiful alicorn. As peace is restored, Hitch resumes his duties as Sheriff, the lighthouse is rebuilt, and Sprout is given a second chance as a janitor, symbolizing a glorious new era where friendship and magic thrive once again.
