As John and Barbara pay their respects at their father’s grave in a Pennsylvania cemetery, they inadvertently find themselves engulfed in a nightmare of chaos and death. An eerie phenomenon unfolds across the country as the dead rise with uncontrollable rage. Their peaceful visit to the graveyard is brutally interrupted when John is attacked by the undead, forcing Barbara into a desperate flight to a nearby farmhouse. Unfortunately, this brief sanctuary exposes her to a horrific sight: the remnants of a woman who met a gruesome end amidst the chaos.

Overwhelmed by shock, Barbara is unable to react as Ben arrives, desperately seeking refuge from the increasing tide of reanimated corpses drawn to the blaze at Beekman’s Diner. He recounts the horrifying moment when a propane truck slammed into a gas station, igniting flames that attract the undead. Ben soon realizes that these monstrous beings have a peculiar fear of fire—a finding he plans to leverage as he fights for survival.

As Barbara remains in shock, Ben steps up to protect her and fend off the relentless undead, fueled by an unwavering determination. He finds allies in fellow survivors: Harry Cooper, his wife Helen, and their injured daughter Karen; along with Tom and Judy, a young couple trying to escape the onslaught.

However, as tensions rise, Ben and Harry clash over their survival strategies. While Ben pushes for reinforcing their defenses in the farmhouse, Harry insists on retreating to the cellar, setting the stage for a heated confrontation between two men grappling with their instinct for survival.

Meanwhile, stark TV news reports unveil the terrifying reality unfolding across the Eastern seaboard, detailing rampant carnage and the chaos of the undead invading communities. The route to salvation is clear: it requires a bullet to the brain or a fiery end—lessons that Ben has already painfully learned. Signs of hope emerge as rescue centers begin to appear, glimmers of salvation in the heart of madness.

In a desperate bid for survival, they hatch a plan to refuel at a nearby pump before making their escape in Ben’s truck. With Tom and Judy behind the wheel, Ben prepares a torch to ward off the approaching undead. However, fate takes a dark turn as a spill ignites the truck, leading to a catastrophic explosion that claims Tom and Judy’s lives amidst a horrific whirlwind of destruction. Ben rushes back to the farmhouse only to find Harry has locked him out at gunpoint. Ignoring Harry’s threat, Ben forces his way inside and engages him in a fierce struggle for survival.

Amidst the escalating chaos, a chilling report reveals Sheriff McClelland organizing posses to hunt down the rampaging undead. Once more in the farmhouse, Ben and Harry grapple for control over a rifle, resulting in Ben fatally shooting Harry in the commotion. In a tragic twist, Helen discovers her daughter Karen devouring Harry’s corpse, leading to a gruesome fate for her as well when Karen turns on her with a gardening trowel.

The farmhouse spirals further into horror as the undead swarm. With Barbara succumbing to the chaos, Ben retreats into the basement in a desperate attempt to escape the carnage above. When Harry rises as a zombie, Ben quickly silences him with a gunshot. Not allowing any chance for the undead to proliferate further, he also ensures Helen’s body is dealt with.

As dawn breaks, Sheriff McClelland’s posse arrives, systematically taking down zombies. The commotion draws Ben’s attention, but his attempts to signal are tragically misinterpreted by Vince, who, under the sheriff’s orders, tragically shoots Ben. His lifeless body is then added to a pyre of fallen corpses, burned by the posse as a grim testament to their relentless efforts to eliminate the undead scourge.
