As the chill of winter 2013 envelops the Teague family home, Matt and Nicole Teague face the agonizing task of sharing a heartbreaking truth with their daughters, Molly and Evie: Nicole’s battle with ovarian cancer has reached a terminal stage. Meanwhile, their steadfast ally, Dane Faucheux, remains close, vigilantly watching over the girls as they navigate these turbulent waters.

Rewind to 2000, in the lively atmosphere of New Orleans, where Matt, a resourceful journalist, and Nicole, a passionate theater actress, cross paths with Dane, a camera operator chasing his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Their friendship flourishes, and by 2008, Matt and Nicole have established a family in Fairhope, Alabama, with their children, Molly and Evie. As a war correspondent, Matt often finds himself away for extended periods, creating strains in family life, while Dane continues to grapple with his own aspirations in New Orleans.

On Thanksgiving Day, feeling trapped in a routine, Dane takes the bold step of embarking on a solo backpacking journey to the Grand Canyon, leaving everything behind. However, serendipity steps in when a compassionate stranger restores his sense of purpose. In 2010, after discovering Nicole’s infidelity, Matt, with Dane’s unwavering support, seeks to mend their relationship. At this time, Dane begins a new chapter in his life, working as a sporting goods store manager and beginning a romance with Kat. Little does he realize that his true calling awaits him.

By September 2012, Nicole receives her devastating diagnosis, and thus begins a grueling fight against cancer. Aware of the heavy burden that lies ahead, Dane rises to the occasion, ready to support the Teague family during these trying times. As Nicole’s health declines, he assumes many household duties, though Kat struggles to understand Dane’s unwavering loyalty to his friends, leading to friction in their relationship. By Christmas, Nicole’s condition worsens, leaving Dane to comfort the girls as they grapple with their mother’s illness.

After a pivotal surgery, the doctor delivers heartbreaking news: Nicole’s cancer has metastasized, and they have only months to create lasting memories together. Motivated by this harsh reality, Nicole collaborates with Matt and Dane to create a bucket list of experiences, checking off items such as riding in the Mardi Gras parade, swimming in a historic fountain, and composing heartfelt letters for their daughters’ milestones. As 2013 approaches its end, Nicole’s health continues to decline, and the moment arrives to reveal the heartbreaking truth to Molly and Evie. With heavy hearts, Dane witnesses the tearful outpouring of his beloved girls, their innocence shattered in the face of mortality.

As the scorching summer of 2014 unfolds, the toll of Nicole’s illness manifests in her irritability, hallucinations, and pain. Sensing Matt’s escalating distress, Dane decides to intervene by taking his friend on a hike to rejuvenate his spirit. However, upon their return, Matt confronts the painful realization that they can no longer provide the care Nicole requires. In a moment of clarity, he reaches out to Faith Pruett, a knowledgeable hospice nurse who brings a sense of serenity amid chaos. As Nicole’s loved ones gather for one last bittersweet farewell, each moment becomes a cherished memory. One fateful night, Faith observes Nicole’s fading heartbeat, prompting the group to make a poignant pilgrimage to the beach for a final sunrise together. In the serene stillness of dawn, Nicole peacefully departs, cradled by the love of Matt, Dane, and their family.

Following Nicole’s passing, Dane retreats into a shell, suppressing his grief as he grapples with the immense loss. Conversely, Matt channels his emotions into writing, creating a heartfelt article titled “The Friend,” an ode to their shared journey. In a gesture of profound appreciation, he gifts Dane this tribute, acknowledging that mere words fall short of expressing his gratitude. Gradually, as Dane processes his sorrow, he finds the courage to return home, having shared an extraordinary fourteen months with the Teague family. A tender embrace between Matt and Dane communicates that simple words cannot encompass the depth of their bond. As the story concludes, Matt’s article earns accolades, including recognition in Esquire magazine, while he remains in Fairhope, surrounded by the enduring love and memories of his family. At the same time, Dane, now married in 2019, continues to cherish his connection with the Teague family, despite the distance.
