Who plays the character of Alice Bowman?
Alice Bowman, portrayed by Meg Ryan, relocates to the fictional South American country of Tecala due to her husband, Peter David Morse, being assigned to help construct a dam. Although unsettled by yet another move, Alice supports Peter’s endeavor. Tragedy strikes when he is seized by guerrilla rebels from the Liberation Army of Tecala (ELT) during an ambush while traveling in a convoy.
Enter Terry Thorne, a skilled ex-Australian SASR soldier, played by Russell Crowe, who has recently completed a successful hostage rescue mission in Chechnya. Recognized for his expertise in complex kidnap and ransom situations, Thorne is brought in to help secure Peter’s release. However, complications arise when it’s discovered that Peter’s employer lacks sufficient insurance to cover the ransom, resulting in Thorne’s temporary dismissal from the mission. Despite Alice’s heartfelt requests, he departs from Tecala.
Teaming up with a local hostage negotiator, Alice is pressed to meet the ELT’s initial demand of a $50,000 ransom payment. In a stroke of fate, Thorne’s conscience brings him back, halting the completion of the transaction. Together with Dino, an ex-Green Beret portrayed by David Caruso, Thorne embarks on a mission to negotiate Peter’s safe return.
Weeks pass, and through conversations on the radio with an ELT representative, Thorne and Alice’s relationship deepens as they grapple with the negotiations. Tensions rise when the ELT demands a staggering ransom of $650,000 for Peter’s release. Meanwhile, Peter, now held captive in a jungle camp, meets Kessler, a long-term hostage and former French Foreign Legionnaire. Together, they plot an escape, only to have their efforts thwarted when Peter is recaptured.
The grim news escalates when Kessler, while recovering in the hospital, informs Alice that he suspects Peter might be dead after hearing a gunshot just before Peter’s recapture. Thorne remains hopeful, determined to prove Kessler wrong. A breakthrough occurs when Alice’s housekeeper’s daughter identifies the ELT’s radio contact through her past laundry services. This leads Thorne to confront the legitimate identity of the ELT negotiator during the Tecala Armed Forces Demonstration Parade.
Despite confirming that Peter is indeed alive, Thorne learns that they can no longer negotiate due to the sensitive information Peter has inadvertently come across. To turn the tide, Thorne persuades Alice to convince the Tecala government that the ELT is planning an imminent attack on their newly built oil pipeline. The army’s mobilization diverts the ELT forces away from the camp, granting Thorne, Dino, and their team the perfect chance to execute a daring raid.
With resolve and skill, they overwhelm the complacently defended camp, rescuing not only Peter but also an Italian hostage. The emotional reunion between Alice and Peter culminates the harrowing experience. In a poignant closing moment, Thorne and Alice share an unspoken connection, underscoring the profound bond formed amidst chaos and danger, culminating in the image of a solitary yet heroic figure.
