The visual execution and sensory elements are competent, while the narrative feels predictable and the character development is thin. Critics and viewers note that the film’s strengths lie in its animation quality and franchise references, but shortcomings in story depth and emotional engagement limit its overall impact. Consequently, the film sits in the lower‑mid range of appeal.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Resident Evil: Death Island
Art & Craft
In terms of art and craft, the film showcases solid animation and competent CG work. Critics highlight the quality of the visual effects and the continuity of character design, such as retaining the actress for Jill. However, some reviewers describe the overall execution as underwhelming, indicating room for improvement. The net impression is a respectable technical achievement that meets genre expectations.
Character & Emotion
When evaluating character and emotion, the movie offers limited depth. While fans appreciate the assembly of familiar faces, the villain and newer characters receive little development, and emotional resonance is minimal. Critics note a lack of substantive dialogue and a reliance on fan nostalgia over nuanced performances. Overall, the character work is superficial, diminishing the film’s emotional impact.
Story & Flow
Regarding story and flow, the plot is described as predictable and merely a vehicle for action set‑pieces. Some reviewers commend its alignment with franchise lore, yet many point to a lack of originality and uneven pacing. The narrative succeeds in moving from one encounter to the next but fails to engage beyond surface-level excitement. Consequently, the story sits squarely in the middle of the rating spectrum.
Sensory Experience
The sensory experience receives generally positive remarks. Animation quality and sound design are praised as strong points, with reviewers noting crisp visuals and effective audio cues. While the film does not venture into horror ambience, its soundtrack and visual style support the action‑heavy tone. The sensory components therefore contribute positively to the overall viewing experience.
Rewatch Factor
Rewatch factor is mixed, appealing mainly to dedicated franchise fans. Some critics and users suggest the film provides enough fan service to warrant a second look, while others find little incentive for repeat viewings due to predictable storytelling and limited character growth. The overall replay value is modest, reflecting a niche but not universal appeal.

As the tales of Raccoon City emerge, a dark scheme unravels in 1998. Amidst the escalating pandemonium, the Umbrella Corporation initiates a covert evacuation for its higher-ups and government allies. To carry out this operation, a private military group known as Unit 6 is deployed, but destiny has a different agenda. Most unit members fall victim to the relentless zombie hordes, leaving only JJ and Dylan Blake to navigate the chaos. Desperately seeking extraction and medical assistance from headquarters, they are met with a harrowing order: quarantine and eliminate their fallen comrades. This brutal ultimatum triggers a fierce argument between the two, culminating in tragedy as JJ becomes another casualty of the horrors he desperately attempted to escape.
Fast forward to 2015, a new peril rears its head. FOS Agent Ingrid Hunnigan summons DSO agent Leon S. Kennedy for a crucial mission aimed at capturing Doctor Antonio Taylor, a rogue scientist suspected of leaking classified information to foreign entities. During a crucial briefing, Leon discovers that Taylor had previously eluded the San Francisco Police Department before vanishing in a vehicle. Recognizing the speeding van, Leon bravely tries to intercept it, only to be obstructed again by Maria Gomez, a shrewd criminal who has a history with him.
In a parallel subplot, BSAA advisor Rebecca Chambers alerts agent Chris Redfield about a troubling outbreak. Twelve individuals have been infected with an advanced variant of the T-virus, seemingly administered against their will. As Chris struggles to process this alarming news, he contacts his partner, Jill Valentine, attempting to dissuade her from joining the operation, given her tumultuous history under Albert Wesker and her ongoing mental health challenges. Yet, determined, Jill insists on participating, leaving Chris with no choice but to proceed alone.
As Chris and Jill team up with Claire Redfield, a groundbreaking revelation occurs: Rebecca informs them about an orca infected with the very T-virus strain affecting human victims, seen near the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, eerily paralleling the fate of many missing whales. The investigation takes a compelling turn when it’s uncovered that all victims had past connections to Alcatraz Island. Consequently, Jill and the Redfields infiltrate the infamous prison under the guise of tourists, only to be met with a sudden zombie outbreak that throws them into a frantic scramble for safety.
Jill soon finds herself entangled with Leon in the winding sewers, battling a new breed of Lickers before stumbling across an armory filled with blueprints for deadly drones designed to disseminate the virus. However, their moment of clarity is fleeting, as they find themselves captured by Dylan and imprisoned alongside Taylor and the Redfields. Overwhelmed by despair, Dylan unleashes his fury, infecting Leon, Claire, Chris, and Rebecca with the virus but sparing Jill, forcing her to witness her friends’ horrific downfall.
As the infected succumb to their fates, Dylan’s true motives come to light: he has seized Glenn Arias’ crime syndicate and formed a sinister alliance with Maria, who is driven by revenge for her father Diego’s demise. Coldly, Dylan executes Taylor and slips away to unleash his drones across the globe.
On the brink of extinction, Claire receives a vital code from Taylor that enables Rebecca to create a vaccine, saving the afflicted group. Leon tracks down Maria, seeking brutal retribution for her part in the devastation. With their allies restored, Jill, Leon, Chris, and Rebecca unite to confront Dylan, who has fused with a bio-organic weapon in an effort to overpower them.
In an audacious turn of events, Claire and Rebecca commandeer Dylan’s drones, programming them to infect him, which weakens his monstrous form just enough for Jill, Leon, and Chris to deliver the decisive strike. As silence envelops the battlefield, Chris commends Jill’s unwavering bravery while they await rescue from the approaching BSAA helicopters.
