Eight months have passed since Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey), the notorious scientist and Sonic’s greatest foe—nicknamed “Eggman”—was defeated and left stranded on a distant planet in space. In this time, Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz), who was adopted by Tom Wachowski (James Marsden)—the local sheriff of Green Hills, Montana—and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter), who is also Sonic’s mother, struggles with his desire to be a hero. Eager to assist the community, he tries to act as a vigilante, but his impulsive nature leads him to cause more trouble than good, often endangering public property and hindering law enforcement efforts.
Tom advises our blue hero to exercise patience—reminding him that there will come a day when his gifts will truly be needed. Soon enough, Tom and Maddie leave for Hawaii to attend the wedding of her sister Rachel (Natasha Rothwell). With plans for a carefree time home alone, Sonic’s fun is abruptly interrupted when Robotnik returns, this time accompanied by Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba). Knuckles, a fierce red warrior possessing superhuman strength and a deep commitment to honor, arrives through a portal after Robotnik uses a quill from Sonic to signal for help.
As Knuckles seeks the fabled Master Emerald, an artifact of immense power that can manipulate reality, he forms an uneasy alliance with Robotnik, aiming to eliminate Sonic in the process. Meanwhile, Sonic is unexpectedly joined by Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), a two-tailed fox who idolizes him. Tails warns Sonic about Knuckles’s intentions, though Sonic initially dismisses the legend of the Master Emerald as mere folklore. However, with a determination to help, Sonic persuades Tails to assist in locating the emerald.
The duo follows clues left by Sonic’s deceased guardian, Longclaw (Donna J. Fulks), leading them to an ancient temple in Siberia. They discover that the Echidna tribe had once forged the Chaos Emeralds into the Master Emerald to create a legendary weapon before the Owls intervened to prevent catastrophic power from falling into one species’s hands. Unbeknownst to them, Robotnik and Knuckles are in pursuit, and during a critical moment, they manage to swipe a valuable compass just as an avalanche strikes.
After a frantic call for help from the mountain, Tom uses a ring to teleport to Sonic and Tails, taking them to the wedding. However, things take a dark turn when Rachel’s fiancé Randall (Shemar Moore) and his wedding guests reveal their true identities as agents of the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.), arresting Sonic for being an uncontrolled extraterrestrial. Fortunately, Tails, Sonic, and Tom are soon rescued by Maddie and an empowered Rachel, igniting their resolve to combat Robotnik.
The chase leads them to a temple housing the Master Emerald, where chaos erupts as Sonic confronts Knuckles, providing a distraction for Robotnik to absorb the emerald’s powers. In a catastrophic event, the temple collapses, forcing Sonic and Knuckles to join forces to escape—Tails comes to their aid in a biplane. Back in Green Hills, Robotnik, now more formidable than ever due to his newfound powers, constructs a giant robot in his image, inciting an epic battle.
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles work together to seize back the Master Emerald, but their efforts result in its fragmentation into the seven Chaos Emeralds. When all seems lost, Tom and Maddie assist Sonic in harnessing the emerald’s power, allowing him to transform into Super Sonic—not only to thwart Robotnik’s robotic menace but also to restore the emeralds.
In the aftermath, Knuckles mends the Master Emerald from its shattered pieces and vows to guard it alongside Sonic and Tails, as they all settle into a peaceful life with the Wachowskis. A mid-credits scene teases further adventures: Stone infiltrates G.U.N. and uncovers a long-dormant project related to Shadow. The adventure isn’t over yet!
