As Alex Shaw (Jason Patric) hurtles through the streets on his motorcycle, hot on the tail of a stolen goods-laden vehicle, he finds himself caught up in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. The adrenaline-fueled chase ultimately yields its intended result - the apprehension of the perpetrator - but little does Alex know that this momentary reprieve will soon give way to a far more pressing concern. Back on dry land, his girlfriend Annie (Sandra Bullock) is busy navigating the treacherous waters of her driving test when she unwittingly stumbles upon Alex's true profession: he's not just any beach cop, but a member of the elite SWAT team. As a token of apology for his deception, Alex whisks Annie away on a luxurious Caribbean cruise aboard the opulent Seabourn Legend.

But just as the champagne toasts and sun-kissed strolls along the Lido deck are getting underway, a sinister presence lurks in the shadows. John Geiger (Willem Dafoe), a seemingly innocuous passenger, quietly sets about wreaking havoc on the ship's communication systems by detonating explosives throughout its corridors. As the ship descends into chaos, Geiger's malevolent intentions become crystal clear: he's not just seeking to disable the vessel - he's hell-bent on bringing it crashing down.

Meanwhile, Annie and Alex find themselves fighting for survival as they join forces with a ragtag group of passengers to stave off disaster. As panic sets in and the ship begins to fill with toxic smoke, a young deaf girl named Drew (Christine Firkins) becomes trapped in an elevator, her fate hanging precariously in the balance. The couple's desperation to escape the sinking ship is matched only by their determination to rescue those left behind - including Juliano (Temuera Morrison), the stalwart first officer who finds himself thrust into the role of commander-in-waiting.

As Alex and Annie navigate the treacherous landscape, they must confront Geiger head-on if they hope to survive the night. With skeet guns at the ready, they lead a daring charge against the villain's stronghold, only to find themselves on the receiving end of yet another devastating blow: remotely triggered explosives that threaten to rip their world asunder. Amidst the chaos, Annie's resourcefulness and quick thinking prove invaluable in rescuing those trapped behind smoke-filled fire doors - while Alex's strategic thinking inspires a plan to slow the ship's descent into disaster by flooding its ballast tanks. In this desperate bid for survival, two star-crossed lovers must confront their own mortality, as well as the unyielding fury of the sea itself.

As the ship succumbs to the relentless deluge of water, Alex's gaze is drawn to the monitor displaying Drew's desperate bid for survival. With a surge of adrenaline, Alex springs into action, racing towards the elevator shaft to rescue her. Meanwhile, Geiger seizes the opportunity to slip away unnoticed, exiting the vault and disappearing from view. But Alex is hot on his heels, confronting him with a pistol drawn. Despite being outmaneuvered, Alex manages to corner Geiger, only for the cunning villain to escape by slamming shut the fire door mere inches from their faces.

Geiger then uses the ship's intercom system to reveal his sinister plan: he's designed the autopilot system and is exacting revenge on the cruise line after being callously fired following a bout of copper poisoning. Undeterred, Alex pursues Geiger, who once again proves elusive, this time by attaching a grenade to a door and making a swift exit.

As the crew scrambles to respond to the crisis, they discover that Geiger has set the ship on a collision course with an oil tanker near the picturesque shores of Saint Martin. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Alex decides to take drastic action, diving underwater to jam the propeller shaft with a steel cable in a desperate bid to alter the ship's trajectory.

Geiger, however, is one step ahead, using the ship's winch system to snap the cable and free the ship from its restraints. He then takes Annie hostage and makes a daring escape onto a waiting boat, leaving Alex to face a seemingly insurmountable task.

Undaunted, Alex teams up with Dante to execute an audacious plan in the bilge pump room. By manipulating the bow thrusters, they manage to turn the ship away from its impending doom, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision with the oil tanker. The ship screeches to a halt mere inches from disaster, before making a precarious landing on the shore of a nearby island.

As the dust settles, Alex springs into action once more, leaping off the sinking vessel to rescue Annie and commandeering Maurice's (Glenn Plummer) speedboat in a thrilling high-stakes chase. Geiger, meanwhile, has taken Annie aboard a seaplane, but Alex is hot on his heels, firing a spear gun to bring down the aircraft and reel himself in through the water.

Alex then executes a daring rescue, climbing onto the plane and freeing Annie from her captor's clutches. Together, they escape the wreckage of the plane, which crashes into the oil tanker with explosive consequences.

As the survivors make their way back to shore on Maurice's boat, Alex presents Annie with a poignant wedding ring, asking her if she'll wear it "for a while" – a gesture that speaks volumes about the depth of their bond. With tears in her eyes, Annie accepts, and the two share a moment of tender intimacy as they navigate the choppy waters of their tumultuous journey.
