In a world where idealized perfection is constantly projected through the screens we gaze at, a man’s pursuit of flawlessness spirals into an all-consuming obsession. Gary Shaller, portrayed by Martin Freeman, once a keyboardist for the now-defunct band “On the One”, finds himself adrift in a life void of purpose. His relationship with Dora, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, is precariously balanced, while his creative spark is wasted on writing and producing superficial commercial jingles for his old friend Paul, played by Simon Pegg.
As Gary navigates this mundane existence, his subconscious starts to bring forth fantastical dreamscapes, prominently featuring an enchanting woman named Anna, played by Penélope Cruz. Her captivating beauty captures his thoughts and ignites a fascination for lucid dreaming, leading him to explore deeper dimensions of the subject. He takes classes under the engaging guru Mel, portrayed by Danny DeVito, and immerses himself in literature that expands his understanding of dreams.
Gary’s obsession with Anna reaches a peak when he discovers that she is not merely a figment of his imagination, but a real individual. Through Paul’s orchestrations, Gary finally has the chance to meet Anna, yet the truth of their encounter starkly contrasts with his idealized fantasies, leaving him heartbroken. Defeated, he retreats into his dreams, seeking solace in the imagined world with Anna by soundproofing his apartment and adjusting his sleep cycle to prolong his time in this blissful escape.
However, as Gary sinks deeper into this alternate reality, his grasp on the real world starts to disintegrate. Overwhelmed by guilt for neglecting Dora, he strives to reconnect with her, but life intervenes dramatically. A collision with a speeding car sends him tumbling onto the concrete, and as the film concludes, Gary is left fully enveloped in his dreamland while his physical body remains comatose in a hospital bed, trapped between two worlds.
