A year after being unceremoniously discarded by Brian, the man who was the cornerstone of her decade-long high-profile relationship, Jenna Jones finds herself thrust into a new chapter of her life as her mother finally urges her to move out. With her sights set on a fresh start, Jenna relocates back to New York City, eager to dive into the world of beauty journalism. She must set aside her pride and approach her frenemy, Darcy, for a job at Darzine, and to her surprise, she’s offered the position of Creative Director on a three-month trial basis.
That very night, Jenna embarks on a night out with her two closest friends, where in a moment of spontaneity, she finds herself locking lips with a man fifteen years her junior. The next day, fate hilariously intertwines their paths again as she meets Eric, the very same younger man, who happens to be Darcy’s son and the new videographer for the company. As they begin working on the magazine’s subscription relaunch, Jenna and Eric agree to keep their illicit rendezvous a secret from their coworkers.
Their first collaborative effort, a visit to the reclusive Greta Blumen, turns into an embarrassing disaster, leading to a heated argument that keeps them from speaking all weekend. However, by Monday, they call a truce, and Jenna extends an invitation for Eric to join her for dinner with her friends, where they encounter Jimmy, a perpetually single 50-year-old with a chip on his shoulder who seems to take an instant dislike to Eric. As the dinner progresses and the guests begin to depart, Jenna and Eric steal some time alone, allowing sparks to fly between them once more.
As they delve deeper into their creative venture, Jenna confides in Eric that reminiscing about classic films sparks an idea in her mind; she wants to create a tribute to classic couture titled Perfect Find. With the support of some top designers and media influencers, they begin to garner attention, and soon find themselves celebrating their campaign’s success while walking along the iconic Brooklyn Bridge together, crystalline champagne flutes in hand. Just as they agree to take a step back and keep things casual, they are once again drawn to each other and retreat to her apartment.
In moments of vulnerability, Eric shares the poignant story of his father, Otis, who tragically lost his life when Eric was just a toddler, and reveals his aspirations to create a film honoring him. Jenna, meanwhile, recounts her past with Brian, highlighting their early college days as a power couple whose achievements led them to fame. In an unexpected twist, a Forbes article featuring Brian tragically reveals his lingering feelings for Jenna, and things are further complicated when The New York Times decides to profile Darcy as a media mogul in connection to Perfect Find, shifting the spotlight significantly onto their collaborative efforts.
As tensions rise, Jenna feels a pang of jealousy toward Eric’s ex, Madison, prompting a fallout after an event that leaves Eric frustrated and without a word to Jenna. Returning home, she discovers Brian awaiting her presence, grieving the loss of his mother. Despite his sadness, Jenna drives him home, an action that Eric witnesses, fueling his anger. With Eric absent from work the following day, Jenna decides to visit him at Darcy’s penthouse in a bid to reconcile. Their moment of intimacy is interrupted when Darcy catches them in a compromising position, leading to Jenna getting fired and Eric failing to defend her.
As the new year looms, Jenna finally convinces Eric to meet her at a café where they can talk things through. By this point, Jenna is teaching a course on fashion in film at Columbia, while Eric is progressing on his film about Otis thanks to a grant. However, unforeseen circumstances arise when Jenna reveals she is pregnant, prompting an explosive reaction from Eric that sends him storming out.
Not long after, Darcy strides into Jenna’s apartment with unexpected news: she claims they are now family, having raised Eric on her own after being disowned by her own parents. Ultimately, Eric joins Jenna for her next doctor’s appointment, and they start to navigate the future together, culminating with their attendance at the next highly anticipated Darzine Gala.
This tale beautifully weaves together themes of resilience, second chances, and the complexities of relationships, all while featuring an unforgettable cast that includes Aisha Hinds, Gabrielle Union, DB Woodside, Devale Ellis, Keith Powers, La La Anthony, Ts Madison, and Janet Hubert among many others, who bring life to an engaging and heartfelt narrative.
