The Willoughbys 2020

A clever cat serves as the narrator, weaving the tale of the Willoughby siblings: Tim, Jane, and the twins, both named Barnaby. Despite the Willoughby family’s storied legacy, the children’s parents focus solely on themselves, harboring a disdain for children and leaving their offspring starved for affection, nourishment, and joy. Tim yearns for the grandeur of his family’s past.

The plot thickens when Jane discovers a baby left on their doorstep. Ignoring Tim’s warnings, she brings the baby inside, only for it to wreak havoc in their lives. The Willoughby parents, frustrated with their children’s antics, evict them from the house, threatening to only let them back if they abandon the baby. In a moment of desperation, the siblings embark on a whimsical quest, chasing a rainbow to Commander Melanoff’s candy factory, where they leave the baby, whom they name “Ruth.” Fueled by dreams of a better life, they concoct a mischievous plan intended to rid themselves of their neglectful parents. They create a vacation brochure featuring perilous destinations designed to eliminate their parents and free them from their troubled existence.

To their delight, the Willoughby parents eagerly seize the opportunity presented in the brochure and set off on their adventure. Meanwhile, Tim struggles to care for Jane and the Barnabys, feeling overwhelmed until their new nanny—the warm-hearted Linda—arrives. Unlike their parents, Linda quickly endears herself to Jane and the twins, while Tim remains skeptical. Upon discovering Ruth, Linda rushes to the candy factory with the children. Melanoff explains that he had planned on handing the baby over to the Department of Orphan Services but grew attached to her instead.

Despite their parents facing multiple death-defying escapades, they soon deplete their finances. Rather than returning home, they opt to sell their house to fund their extended vacation. In a voice message, they inform Linda, who assures them that she will care for the children. However, Tim, after misinterpreting her intentions regarding their safety, karate-chops his way into chaos by calling Orphan Services to report Linda.

After the Willoughby parents engage a realtor to sell their home, the children frighten away all potential buyers— except one family, whom Linda chases off in a fit of protective instinct. Finally recognizing Linda’s genuine compassion, Tim undergoes a change of heart. But fate intervenes as Orphan Services arrives in response to Tim’s call, causing Linda to take off in sorrow as the siblings are forcibly separated and placed into different foster homes.

Determined, Tim repeatedly escapes his well-meaning foster families, racing to the home just as it’s demolished. Orphan Services decides to detain him in their headquarters, where the clever cat narrator takes matters into its own paws, delivering Tim’s helmet to Linda. Realizing she must reunite the siblings, Linda disguises herself as a janitor, sneaks into Tim’s cell, reconciles with him, and orchestrates a daring breakout.

With the help of Linda, Ruth, and Melanoff, the Willoughby siblings devise a plan to return to their parents, hoping that doing so will appease Orphan Services. They ingeniously construct a dirigible to rescue their parents from the perilous “Unclimbable Alps” in Switzerland. Upon reaching their destination and following a trail of their mother’s yarn, they find their parents perilously close to freezing. With the help of the cat, they save their parents, confessing that they had sent them away but long for family. Yet, despite their moment of reckoning, the selfish Willoughby parents abandon the children again by seizing the dirigible and crashing it into the ocean—leading to their demise at the jaws of a hungry shark.

Now stranded on the mountain and facing bitter cold, the siblings begin to lose hope, but Jane begins to sing. Luckily, Ruth, Melanoff, and Linda, having tracked the dirigible’s chaotic path, hear her song just in time. Officially orphans, the Willoughbys are embraced by Linda and Melanoff, embarking on a new and joyful chapter together with Ruth and the wise cat, residing happily in the candy factory. Meanwhile, the Willoughby parents, stranded at sea after their ill-fated crash, face the consequences of their selfishness.
