What job is Wesley interviewing for at the beginning of the film?
Wesley Darya, portrayed by Nasim Pedrad, is on a frustrating quest to secure both a job and a meaningful relationship. After a disastrous interview with Principal Judy that leads to an inappropriate suggestion about sex education, her mood darkens further when she learns from her ex that he is now engaged to a stunning European woman. Seeking companionship, she reluctantly agrees to go on a blind date with a guy named Sean, but the date takes a turn for the worse as he abruptly leaves when she brings up topics like marriage and children too often.
Just after this disappointing encounter, Wesley runs into Jared, a charming stranger who helps her after a minor fall. Eager to impress him and desperate for romance, she conceals her true self, even pretending to enjoy bubble soccer and feigning disdain for her favorite guilty pleasure: donuts topped with hot dogs. Complicating matters, Jared is still tied to his ex-fiancée Lucy, who he claims has developed some psychological issues. Despite these challenges, they find intimacy after a month of dating.
However, when Jared abruptly goes silent for five days after their physical encounter, Wesley fears he’s ghosted her. In a drunken haze, she and her best friends, Brooke and Kaylie, unleash their frustrations by crafting a scathing email to him. Just as they hit send, Jared calls to explain he’s been in a serious accident abroad, trapped in a medically induced coma. To mend their fractured communication, Wesley courageously decides to travel to Mexico with her friends, aiming to delete the email before he can read it.
Upon arrival, chaos ensues as she inadvertently encounters Sean at the same resort. Armed only with a towel and her determination, she embarks on a series of humorous attempts to locate Jared’s room while trying to avoid a series of embarrassing mishaps, including getting caught in a mix-up at a neighboring casita. Just when things couldn’t get more complicated, her efforts to hoist herself back into Jared’s good graces lead to misunderstandings that label her an inappropriate figure in front of other guests.
The misadventures escalate, leading to her being kicked out of the resort, only to be rescued by Sean and her friends. However, her attempts at redemption are met with resistance as they grow weary of her antics. Meanwhile, Kaylie seeks solace from the spiritual guru Angel de la Paz, exploring themes of motherhood and self-discovery, while Brooke finds herself in an unexpected romantic connection with Angel.
As Wesley strives to set things right between her and Jared, she embarks on a journey of self-realization and facing her flaws. Maxing out her courage on a flight back from Mexico, she prepares to come clean about the email but instead faces rejection when Jared breaks up with her upon learning of the email’s contents. Her friends, feeling neglected, also part ways with her at the airport.
Eventually, hope arrives when Sean helps her land a job as a guidance counselor, a job for which he had put in a good word. In a twist of fate, they reunite at a restaurant, where Wesley admits her true feelings for him. Although Sean initially expresses his wish to keep things casual due to past trauma, he later chases after her, leading to a sweet moment of agreement to date, punctuated with a kiss amidst the bustling street and the remnants of their chaotic journey together.
