Who is the ruler of House Atreides at the beginning of the film?
In the distant future of 10191, humanity has reached a point where faster-than-light travel is a reality and numerous planets have been colonized. Amidst this backdrop, Duke Leto (@oscar-isaac) of House Atreides, the noble leader of the oceanic planet Caladan, receives a significant assignment from Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV. He is to take over the governance of the perilous desert world of Arrakis, which had been under the cruel rule of House Harkonnen for an unforgiving 80 years. Arrakis is not just any planet; it is the sole source of a precious substance known as “spice,” which not only enhances the vitality of its consumers but also expands their consciousness. This commodity is essential for interstellar travel, allowing members of the Spacing Guild to navigate the vastness of space with a limited prescience.
However, this transition is laced with schemes, as Shaddam secretly orchestrates a coup to secure House Harkonnen’s return to power, utilizing the Emperor’s infamous Sardaukar troops to eliminate the Atreides and thwart their rising influence. Despite his reservations, Leto perceives the potential benefits that come with controlling the spice resources and forging an alliance with the planet’s native inhabitants, the Fremen. These skilled fighters, who regard spice as sacred, have been oppressed under the Harkonnen regime.
Leto’s concubine, Lady Jessica (@rebecca-ferguson), is an acolyte of the secretive Bene Gesserit, a sisterhood endowed with extraordinary mental and physical abilities. Part of their intricate breeding program intended for Jessica was to conceive a daughter who would eventually bear the prophesied male Bene Gesserit, known as the Kwisatz Haderach—a being anticipated to combine historic wisdom with foresight. Instead, she gives birth to a son, Paul (@timothe-chalamet), who becomes pivotal in the unfolding events.
Paul is trained by a cadre of loyal aides, including Duncan Idaho (@jason-momoa), Gurney Halleck (@josh-brolin), and the Suk doctor Wellington Yueh (@chen-chang), while Jessica prepares him in the ways of the Bene Gesserit. Yet, Paul feels burdened by haunting visions of the future. When the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (@charlotte-rampling) arrives on Caladan, she subjects him to a perilous test of willpower, one that he miraculously endures.
Amidst the complications, Jessica reveals to Paul the legacy of the Bene Gesserit: for centuries, they have sought to generate a being capable of transcending the space-time continuum. Mohiam’s declaration that Paul’s destiny has already been laid out invites both admiration and concern. While Paul desires to journey to Arrakis with the advance team, Leto fears for his son’s safety, understanding the dangers that lie ahead.
Upon arriving at Arrakeen, the stronghold on Arrakis, tensions rise as Leto meets with Stilgar (@javier-bardem), the chieftain of the Fremen, and Dr. Liet Kynes (@sharon-duncanbrewster), the imperial judge charged with overseeing spice production. In their efforts, they realize the formidable threats posed by the giant sandworms of the desert. The gravity of the situation becomes apparent when they witness one such beast consuming a spice harvester just moments after Leto’s team rescues its stranded crew. As Paul begins to breathe in the spice-rich air, he experiences intense visions that denote the urgency of his mission.
As an assassination attempt against Paul unfolds, Leto heightens their defenses. In a shocking twist of betrayal, Yueh disables the protective shields of Arrakeen, allowing Harkonnen and Sardaukar forces to strike. After incapacitating Leto, Yueh reveals he has made a deal to deliver the Duke to the Harkonnen Baron in hopes of freeing his own captive spouse. Before his demise, Leto manages to unleash a deadly poison gas on the Baron’s men, sacrificing himself in the process.
With Paul and Jessica taken captive and left to die in the unforgiving desert, they exploit their Bene Gesserit training to overpower their captors, utilizing a cerebral skill referred to as “the Voice.” They elude death long enough to discover a survival kit left by Yueh, enabling them to endure the night in the wilderness. It is here that Paul begins to foresee a future marked by a “holy war” under his name.
The Baron, now in command of Arrakis, appoints his ruthless nephew Beast Rabban (@dave-bautista) to stabilize the spice production amidst the chaos of his coup. Ultimately, Paul and Jessica are liberated from captivity through the sacrifices of Duncan and the Fremen, but not without hardship. Together with Duncan and Kynes, they endeavor to navigate the deep deserts, where they encounter the Fremen tribe. Facing opposition from the warrior Jamis (@babs-olusanmokun), Paul is forced to protect his place among them, affirming his commitment to achieving his father’s dream of peace for Arrakis.
