Who is Jake's romantic interest in the film?

Plot Summary

As Jake tags along with McReynolds, Plum, Finn, and Dale on their mission to score invitations for a campus soiree at their pad, they make a pit stop to scope out Beverly (Zoey Deutch) and her roommate. While the guys’ attempts at flirting are met with apathy, Beverly’s gaze lingers on Jake, the quiet one in the rearview mirror. This sparks an interesting dynamic that will unfold throughout the narrative.

Their next destination is The Fox, where they reunite with teammates Nesbit (Austin Amelio), Brumley (Tanner Kalina), and Coma (Forrest Vickery). As they trade witty banter over drinks, the atmosphere is electric. Later, the team meets with their coach to discuss the house rules – a strict no-drinking policy and no female guests in the bedrooms – which the guys deem uncool.

The evening takes a turn as the squad descends upon Sound Machine, where Dale reveals Finn’s unique strategy of downplaying his endowment to avoid coming across as boastful. This leads to a string of successful pickups, with McReynolds, Roper, Jay, and Finn all retiring to their respective rooms for some quality time with their new acquaintances. Jake, however, wants to bring his newfound love upstairs, but Beuter’s reluctance to depart forces him to take her back to his car instead.

As the weekend wears on, Beuter returns home early due to concerns about his girlfriend’s possible pregnancy. The guys spend the intervening hours exploring the town, with Jake sharing his expertise in conquering Space Invaders at the local arcade – the secret lies in eliminating the aliens when they reach the final row, as they won’t return fire.

That night, they make a triumphant return to Sound Machine, only to be forced out due to Niles’ intoxication and subsequent attempt to pick a fight with a bartender. The team decides to lay low at a country music club without Niles, fearing his antics would scare off the ladies. As Jake navigates this unfamiliar environment, Willoughby offers sage advice: he must embrace his inner quirks and not conform to what others expect of him.

As Saturday afternoon unfolds, Jake finds himself surrounded by Willoughby, Dale, and Plum in their cozy room, engaged in a haze of camaraderie as they pass around Willoughby’s bong and delve into conversations about the surreal realms of “The Twilight Zone” and the iconic guitar riffs of Van Halen. The group decides to try some telepathic experiments, attempting to tap into Willoughby’s thoughts and decipher what’s swirling in his mind.

Meanwhile, Jake faces off against McReynolds in a game of ping-pong, with the other guys looking on as he effortlessly dominates the competition. McReynolds’ frustration boils over, leading him to toss his paddle at the wall with such force that it shatters into pieces. The room erupts into chants of “Jake! Jake!” as the young athlete basks in the adoration.

Later that evening, Jake, Plum, Finn, and Brumley take a stroll around the neighborhood, where they stumble upon Justin (Michael Monsour), an old high school buddy of Jake’s. He invites them to join him for beers at his place, which ultimately leads to a punk rock club outing, where they watch Justin’s band perform a raucous cover of the “Gilligan’s Island” theme song.

As the night wears on, the group returns to Willoughby’s house for another raucous party, this time featuring a mud-wrestling spectacle that draws in Finn and sends him tumbling into the muck. Amidst the chaos, Jake slips out to pay a visit to Beverly, leaving her door adorned with flowers and a heartfelt note.

Come Sunday morning, Jake receives a call from Beverly, and they finally have their moment of truth. She’s taken aback by his revelation as a baseball player, having previously assumed athletes were lacking in intellectual pursuits – but Jake’s charms win her over. The two arrange a meeting for the day, with Jake treating her to a sweet treat at the local ice cream parlor. As they chat, he learns that Beverly is pursuing a degree in performing arts and boasts experience at an esteemed acting school.

The afternoon brings the team together for another grueling baseball practice, but this time Niles takes his antics to new heights – or rather, new lows. His erratic behavior culminates in him sending the ball sailing into the parking lot, much to the chagrin of the other teammates. Following practice, the older players exact a hazing ritual upon Jake, Plum, Brumley, and Nesbit, binding them to the wall and subjecting them to a barrage of baseballs. One particularly wayward throw catches Plum squarely in the groin, sending him tumbling into the fray.

In the wake of this initiation, the team heads down to the lake for a refreshing swim, leaving Jake to ponder the trials and tribulations that lie ahead.

The quintessential collegiate camaraderie unfolded as the group of friends made their way to the cafeteria, seeking sustenance for their minds and bodies. Dale, ever the candid one, shared his observations with the freshmen, opining that the upperclassmen, including McReynolds and Roper, didn’t have a care in the world when it came to the newcomers’ struggles or triumphs. His words were soon interrupted by Plum and Nesbit, who brought with them a bombshell: Willoughby, the seemingly innocent freshman, was actually a 30-year-old veteran of college life, perpetually transferring institutions to pursue his passion for baseball. The revelation only grew more astonishing as it became clear that this “Willoughby” wasn’t even his real name. As the guys digested this surprising information, they discovered in Willoughby’s dorm room a Pink Floyd album adorned with a giant joint - which Plum and Nesbit promptly indulged in. This enigmatic individual, who clearly had a deep affinity for the sport, had apparently been using various aliases to continue playing baseball despite his lack of professional prospects.

That night, the group donned their party attire and headed to a nearby residence, where they found themselves immersed in a costume party. Jake’s eyes widened as he spotted Beverly, dressed to perfection as Alice from Wonderland. Finn attempted to regale the crowd with his “average penis” joke, only to be thwarted by the other revelers. As the evening wore on, the group gathered around Beverly as she performed an impromptu “Dating Game” sketch, taking on the role of Alice and enlisting The Mad Hatter (played by one of their friends) and The Queen of Hearts (another friend) to join in. Jake, donning the persona of The Cheshire Cat, added his own whimsical touch to the performance. As the night drew to a close, Jake and Beverly lingered by the lake, sharing their first romantic kiss under the stars.

The next morning, as classes loomed on the horizon, Jake found himself lounging in Beverly’s room, basking in the warmth of her company. They walked together to their respective classrooms, eventually parting ways with a tender farewell kiss. Dale and Finn, observing this display of affection, couldn’t resist teasing their friend about his budding romance. Undeterred, Jake headed to his first class, claiming the seat beside Plum as they both shared an air of confidence regarding what lay ahead in their college journey. As the professor began speaking, Jake’s eyes grew heavy, and he soon succumbed to a gentle doze, a subtle smile spreading across his face as he reveled in the tranquility of the moment.
