In 1994, a tragic incident unfolds at Shadyside Mall when Heather Watkins, a bookstore employee, is gruesomely stabbed by her friend Ryan Torres. This shocking act of violence results in her and several other mall employees losing their lives before Ryan is confronted and killed by Sheriff Nick Goode. The media sensationalizes this massacre, branding Shadyside as the murder capital of the United States. In stark contrast, the nearby town of Sunnyvale enjoys a reputation as one of the wealthiest and safest places in the country. Residents of Shadyside attribute their town’s violent streak to an ancient curse placed by the witch Sarah Fier, who was executed for witchcraft back in 1666.
Deena Johnson, who is skeptical of the curse, has recently ended her relationship with her girlfriend Sam, who has relocated to Sunnyvale. Meanwhile, Deena’s younger brother Josh is immersed in uncovering the town’s chilling history, and their friends Simon and Kate are caught up in a life of petty crime, hoping to escape their grim surroundings. Their worlds collide again when Deena and Sam encounter each other at a vigil in Sunnyvale honoring the victims of the mall tragedy. During the event, tensions flare into a brawl between Shadyside and Sunnyvale students, showcasing deep-rooted rivalries.
On their way home, Sam’s boyfriend Peter menaces Deena and her friends while tailgating their bus. In a fit of rage, Deena nearly hurls a large cooler at Peter’s car, but an unexpected nosebleed causes her to lose control, resulting in Peter’s car crashing. Sam survives this ordeal and experiences a haunting vision of Sarah Fier before being rushed to the hospital.
The following night, Deena and her friends find themselves being pursued by an assailant they initially think is Peter. However, when they visit Sam, they witness Skull Mask attack, revealing a horrific twist that connects back to Ryan. As the danger intensifies, the group learns that Sam’s accident may have disturbed the grave of Sarah Fier, leading to a resurgence of notorious Shadyside killers from the past. The horrifying realization dawns on them: Sam’s blood has unintentionally revived the very killers who haunt their town.
Desperate to break the curse and save their friend, Deena and her allies concoct a plan to properly rebury Sarah Fier’s remains. Unfortunately, their efforts attract the attention of the Camp Nightwing Killer, resulting in a face-off where they must confront their fears. As they devise a strategy to eliminate the killers, it becomes clear that their focus is solely on Sam, drawn to her blood.
Despite Deena’s vehement disapproval, Sam ultimately consents to a desperate strategy involving her own sacrifice. Their quest leads them to C. Berman, a survivor of the Camp Nightwing massacre, but when they fail to contact her, the stakes skyrocket. Kate, Simon, and Josh courageously fight off the killers while trying to protect Sam, but tragedy strikes as they fall prey to the very forces they aim to vanquish.
In a desperate move, Deena suffocates Sam with her permission, temporarily fending off the killers and reviving her through a dramatic sequence of EpiPens and CPR. Following this harrowing encounter, law enforcement decides to scapegoat Simon and Kate based on their shady past. Amidst the chaos, Deena and Sam find strength in each other, publicly affirming their love in the aftermath.
However, their relief is short-lived. Later that evening, while Sam is home, Deena receives a chilling phone call from C. Berman, warning that the witch’s curse cannot be escaped. In an unsettling turn, Sam becomes possessed and confronts Deena, leading to a gripping climax that leaves their fates intertwined with the dark legacy of Sarah Fier.
