Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2002

While spending the summer at the Dursleys, Harry Potter finds himself isolated, with no correspondence from his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. On his twelfth birthday, he is unexpectedly visited by Dobby, a house-elf who ominously warns him that returning to Hogwarts will put his life in danger. In a misguided attempt to protect Harry, Dobby has been intercepting his letters, hoping to make him believe his friends have forgotten him. In a fit of disruption, Dobby destroys a cake that Harry’s Aunt Petunia has prepared for an important dinner, further escalating tensions between Harry and the Dursleys. Blamed for Dobby’s chaos, Harry faces a potential expulsion from wizarding school and finds himself more of a prisoner than ever, as his belongings are locked away and bars are installed on his windows.

Fortunately, hope arrives in the form of Fred and George Weasley along with Ron who come to rescue him in their father’s enchanted Ford Anglia. After a delightful summer at the Weasleys’ home, the group heads to Platform 9¾ for the Hogwarts Express. However, they are shocked to discover they cannot access the barrier between the platforms. In a moment of desperation, Harry and Ron decide to fly to Hogwarts in the car, but they crash into the Whomping Willow, causing damage to Ron’s wand and setting the stage for a tumultuous year ahead.

At Hogwarts, Harry becomes the unwitting focus of attention for several individuals, including the self-absorbed new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, Gilderoy Lockhart (played by Kenneth Branagh), an overzealous admirer named Colin Creevey (Hugh Mitchell), and Ginny Weasley, who harbors a crush on him. The atmosphere darkens when the legendary Chamber of Secrets is opened, unleashing a monster that petrifies several students. Rumors swirl that Harry might be the Heir of Slytherin, especially after his surprising ability to speak Parseltongue is revealed, a skill obtained after Voldemort’s attack on him during infancy.

Determined to uncover the identity of the Heir of Slytherin, Harry, Ron, and Hermione concoct a plan involving Polyjuice Potion to transform into Slytherin students. In a twist of fate, Hermione’s mistaken acquisition of a cat hair leads her to transform into a feline, leaving her in an embarrassing predicament that stretches on for over a month. As the petrifications continue and Ginny mysteriously disappears into the Chamber, a chilling message is scrawled on a wall, indicating that her “skeleton will lie forever.”

In a climactic turn of events, Harry, armed with the help of Ron and Moaning Myrtle (Shirley Henderson), locates the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. They are reluctantly joined by Gilderoy Lockhart, who proves to be more of a liability than an asset, as his failed memory charms turn the situation chaotic. Once inside the Chamber, Harry encounters an unconscious Ginny and a young man named Tom Riddle, who reveals himself as a memory. It becomes evident that Ginny was manipulated by Voldemort, who is revealed to be Tom Riddle, seeking to rid Hogwarts of anyone he deems unworthy.

As the sinister plan unfolds, Harry must face a ferocious basilisk to save Ginny and defeat Riddle. Assisted by Dumbledore’s phoenix, Fawkes, and the sword of Godric Gryffindor, Harry manages to slay the monster and destroy Riddle’s diary, which was the source of much of the conflict. Although venom from the basilisk threatens Harry’s life, Fawkes uses his tears to heal him, allowing both Ginny and Harry to recover fully along with their petrified friends.

In a shocking revelation, Harry identifies Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs) as the one responsible for placing the diary into Ginny’s possession. With the help of Dobby, the loyal house-elf, Harry manages to free him from servitude by gifting him an old sock. In a display of gratitude, Dobby vows to protect Harry, deflecting a deadly curse from Lucius Malfoy. Ultimately, Dumbledore reassures Harry that it is the choices he makes that define him, not his abilities, reminding him of the true nature of belonging and bravery in the world of magic.
