Plot Summary

In 1944, as the Nazis attempt to seize the legendary Lance of Longinus, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and Basil Shaw (Toby Jones) are captured in a castle nestled within the French Alps. However, Indiana executes a daring escape just as an Allied bomb demolishes the bell tower where he was imprisoned. With Colonel Weber (Thomas Kretschmann) orchestrating the relocation of looted treasures to Berlin on a specially commissioned train, Basil is interrogated about the Lance. He insists it is without power and that he and Indy were merely trying to protect history.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), an astrophysicist, reveals to Colonel Weber that the Lance is a fake. However, he has come across half of Archimedes’ Dial, an ingenious Antikythera mechanism that can predict time fissures and potentially allow time travel. Basil, privy to this crucial information, witnesses their conversation.

Indy manages to free Basil on a Berlin-bound train brimming with stolen antiquities. After retrieving the Dial piece from Voller and subduing him, both men leap from the train moments before Allied forces derail it, totally unaware of the Dial’s true significance as Basil refrains from disclosing what he learned from Voller.

Fast forward to 1969, where Indiana is facing retirement from Hunter College in New York City. His marriage to Marion (Karen Allen) is crumbling following the tragic death of their son Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) during the Vietnam War. As Indy teaches about the Roman invasion of Syracuse, Archimedes emerges as a beacon of brilliance with his groundbreaking work using concave mirrors to set fire to enemy ships — a testament to the power of the Antikythera.

His life takes a twist when Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), his goddaughter, arrives with aspirations of researching the Dial. She firmly believes the other half remains hidden in the French Alps and seeks Indy’s partnership. He cautions her about her father’s obsession with the artifact, revealing that Basil had anticipated its potential dangers.

As New York glows with excitement over the moon landing, Voller is also in the city, having contributed to the American space mission. With feelings of resentment lingering from Germany’s defeat in WWII, he is on a mission, assisted by agents like Hauke (Olivier Richters), Klaber (Boyd Holbrook), and Mason (Shaunette Renée Wilson), to locate Helena.

While Indy and Helena search for the Dial in college archives, they encounter an ambush. Framed for murders and forced to navigate through a chaotic ticker-tape parade and protests, Indy is left with no choice but to seek help from his old friend Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), now a New York cab driver.

As the plot thickens, Voller turns on his CIA allies, pursuing Helena with two of his agents, eventually leading Indy to Tangier where Helena plans to auction the Dial. Indy disrupts her auction, but Voller and his allies steal the artifact, igniting a frantic chase through the streets.

Understanding that the remaining Dial coordinates lie with Archimedes’ tomb in the Aegean Sea, Indy, Helena, and her sidekick, Teddy Kumar (Ethann Isidore), join forces with Renaldo (Antonio Banderas), a seasoned sea diver, to uncover the secrets of the ancient sunken Roman ship. Amidst their adventures, Indy confesses his deepest regret—to return and alter the events leading to Mutt’s tragic fate.

In a thrilling showdown, Voller commandeers Renaldo’s boat, demanding Indy decipher a tablet involved in Archimedes’ legacy. Helena proposes to assist for a substantial fee, revealing instructions that lead them to Archimedes’ tomb, which has gone undiscovered for millennia.

Their journey climaxes as they evade Voller to uncover the Dial’s second half in the Ear of Dionysius cavern. As Voller reveals his malevolent plan to travel back in time to alter the outcome of WWII, a fierce confrontation ensues. Indy is taken captive on a stolen plane while Helena secretly follows.

Upon activating the Dial, miscalculations lead them not to 1939 but to the siege of Syracuse in 214 BC. As chaos engulfs them, Indy and Helena escape while Voller’s crew meets a fiery end. Archimedes discovers the wreckage, leading to a pivotal moment where he implores Indy for assistance against the Romans using the Dial.

Filled with regret and a sense of futility, Indy contemplates staying in the past until Helena intervenes, rescuing him from a life of solitude. Back in the present, Indy finds healing and resolution as he reunites with his loved ones, fostering hope for the future.
