Blumhouse's Fantasy Island 2020

The film begins with a mysterious blonde woman, portrayed by Portia Doubleday, who is frantically fleeing through the woods away from a group of men clad in black ops attire and armed with guns. She escapes the treeline and stumbles upon a stunning Tiki-style mansion that overlooks a picturesque beach. In a desperate move, she breaks into the mansion and discovers an office where a phone starts to ring. Upon answering, a calm voice belonging to a man reassures her that help is on the way. When he addresses her as Mrs. Maddison, she questions how he knows her name, to which he cryptically responds, “because you are one of my guests.” Just then, the armed men burst into the room, seizing her and dragging her away.

Fast forward to what appears to be the next morning, we meet a woman in a pristine white dress, identified as Julia, who is sporting a name tag. As she observes a plane descending towards the island, she rushes to inform a well-dressed man in a white suit, played by Michael Peña, about the incoming guests. The surroundings are filled with people dressed in white, indicating they are all part of the staff. The man identifies himself as Mr. Roarke, the enigmatic host of Fantasy Island.

The plane lands, and five new guests disembark: Melanie (played by Lucy Hale), a flirtatious young woman; Patrick (portrayed by Austin Stowell), a shy man with an army background; Gwen (played by Maggie Q), who appears uneasy; JD (played by Ryan Hansen), a boisterous jock; and his stepbrother Brax, played by Jimmy O. Yang, who mirrors JD’s energy. The group is introduced to Roarke, who explains that they have won a competition granting them the opportunity to indulge in their wildest fantasies. However, a wild-looking man with a machete lurks in the shadows, observing their arrival.

Each guest is shown to their opulent rooms, while JD and Brax head to the bar to celebrate. As the day progresses, Roarke advises them that while Melanie, Patrick, and Gwen’s fantasies will begin in the morning, JD and Brax should start immediately. Thus, their worlds begin to unravel as they delve into their unique desires and the island’s strange magic.

As events unfold, JD’s fantasy takes him to a luxurious modern mansion permeated with stunning partygoers, while Brax is led to a similar raucous scene. Yet, Brax experiences unsettling visions involving a burn victim. Meanwhile, Gwen’s compelling backstory is revealed—her regret over turning down her boyfriend Allen, who proposed to her five years ago. With Roarke leading her through the island’s mystique, Gwen soon finds herself dining at the restaurant where she once rejected Allen’s proposal, only to see him unexpectedly appear.

Conversely, Melanie, burdened by her high school trauma, seeks revenge on her former bully, Sloane (played by Portia Doubleday). She navigates a twisted scenario that escalates her plan for retribution into a nightmarish ordeal involving torture that forces her to confront dark truths about herself.

Meanwhile, Patrick, having longed to embody a soldier, finds himself tangled in military chaos while uncovering painful family truths. Each character’s fantasy leads them deeper into the island’s grip, exposing them to the supernatural realities of what they wish for.

As tensions rise on the island, alliances are tested, and the characters come face to face with horrors beyond their control, ultimately wrestling with their past mistakes and their choices.
