Plot Summary

The curtain opens on Belle Reve Penitentiary’s break room, where Brian Durland, aka Savant (Michael Rooker), is indulging in a precision-crafted game of target practice, effortlessly bouncing the ball off walls and even taking out an unsuspecting canary with surgical accuracy. His Zen-like focus is suddenly disrupted by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who bursts into the room to assign him a high-stakes mission.

Savant’s world is turned upside down as he finds himself conscripted into Task Force X, affectionately known as the “Suicide Squad.” This motley crew of misfits includes Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Mongal (Mayling Ng), Javelin (Flula Borg), The Detachable Kid/TDK (Nathan Filion), and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). With Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) at the helm, the team sets its sights on the island of Corto Maltese, where their mission awaits.

As they arrive on the island, Weasel takes an unexpected dip into the drink, his struggles beneath the surface hinting at a tragic flaw: he can’t swim. The Squad’s arrival on shore is met with a traitorous surprise as Blackguard reveals he’s led them straight into the waiting arms of mercenaries. For his treachery, he suffers a gruesome fate – his face blown to smithereens.

As the battle rages on, Harley Quinn unleashes her signature brand of chaos, while Captain Boomerang wields his trusty boomerang to deadly effect. The Detachable Kid’s arms detach and fly off in search of targets, only to falter as ineffective projectiles. Javelin meets a grisly end, impaled by the mercenaries’ blades. Mongal’s valiant efforts to bring down a chopper are foiled when it crashes, engulfing her in flames.

As the Squad falters, Harley and Flag go missing in the chaos, leaving Savant to make his escape – only to be foiled by Amanda Waller’s ominous warning: “You’re not getting out of here alive.” With that, she triggers the explosive device embedded in the back of his head, sending it – and his world – up in flames. The curtain closes on the carnage as Waller dispatches her second team to finish what the first couldn’t.

In a thrilling prelude to the main event, Amanda Waller (character) sets her sights on Robert DuBois/Bloodsport (Idris Elba), a ruthless mercenary with a reputation for being merciless. Her ace in the hole is Tyla (Storm Reid), Bloodsport’s wayward teenage daughter, who’s been caught red-handed and is staring down the barrel of a lengthy prison sentence unless her father cooperates. The two engage in a heated shouting match, with Tyla brutally honest about Bloodsport’s subpar parenting skills. Despite his tough exterior, Waller’s leverage proves too strong, and he reluctantly agrees to play ball. She then introduces him to a motley crew of misfits, including Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (John Cena), a self-proclaimed patriot with a penchant for violence; Cleo Cazo/Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), a rodent whisperer with an unsettling ability to command hordes of rats; Nanaue/King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), an amphibious prince with an insatiable hunger for human flesh; and Abner Krill/Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), a man cursed with a rare genetic condition that allows him to hurl polka-dot-covered projectiles with deadly precision.

Waller brings the team up to speed on their mission parameters, briefing them on the catastrophic situation in Corto Maltese. The nation has been toppled by the ruthless dictator Silvio Luna (Juan Diego Botto) and his loyal lieutenant General Mateo Suarez (Joaquin Cosio), who’ve taken over a decrepit Nazi-era research facility known as Jotunheim. The facility is home to a sinister project codenamed “Starfish,” where experiments are being conducted on a massive, starfish-like alien creature. With Dr. Gaius Grieves/The Thinker (Peter Capaldi) as their guide, the Squad sets out to infiltrate Jotunheim and put an end to whatever malevolent forces are at play. As they arrive at the facility, Luna and Suarez observe their handiwork, a gigantic starfish creature that seems to defy explanation.

As Team 2 navigates the dense jungle terrain, they unwittingly stumble upon a group of mercenaries linked to the military, prompting them to take swift action and eliminate the threat before reaching the camp where Flag is conferring with his clandestine contact, Sol Soria (Alice Braga), a rebellious figure fighting against Luna’s regime. Unbeknownst to the team, this group also happens to be the Freedom Fighters, the very organization that Sol Soria leads in her quest to liberate Corto Maltese from the clutches of Luna and Suarez. As the team emerges from the jungle, they notice Polka Dot Man radiating a kaleidoscope of colors, an unusual phenomenon triggered by his mother’s experimentation on him at STAR Labs, which granted him superpowers along with his siblings. However, this condition comes with a dire warning: if he fails to drain the dots, he will meet his demise. With a warped sense of logic, Polka Dot Man views all his enemies as his mother before delivering a swift and merciless justice.

Meanwhile, Flag insists on rescuing Harley Quinn from Luna’s men, who have taken her captive. As Flag woos Harley with promises of romance and marriage, she is initially charmed by his charm, but when he reveals his sinister plan to utilize Jotunheim’s secrets to eliminate anyone who dares threaten his regime, even if it means targeting innocent children, Harley’s ardor turns to outrage, culminating in her shooting Luna dead. The aftermath sees her captured and imprisoned by Luna’s men.

As the Squad is escorted by Sol Soria’s contact, Milton (Julio Cesar Ruiz), to a seedy bar called La Gatita Amable, where they hope to find Thinker, Ratcatcher piques Bloodsport’s curiosity about his irrational fear of rats. Despite Cleo’s assertion that Bloodsport sees good in him, he consistently recoils at the sight of Sebastian. DuBois confesses that her phobia stems from a traumatic childhood experience when her father, Ratcatcher 1 (Taika Waititi), a drug-addicted rat whisperer, taught her to control and cherish rats but ultimately succumbed to his addiction and overdosed when she was still young. Bloodsport and Ratcatcher forge an unspoken bond, vowing to extricate each other from the impending danger. The team eventually reaches the bar, but Nanaue is forced to remain behind due to his conspicuous appearance.

As the night wears on, The Squad’s revelry is abruptly disrupted by their encounter with Thinker. With the suddenness of a surprise party, they seize him, only to be swiftly interrupted by the arrival of heavily armed military personnel. Bloodsport takes charge, dispatching Ratcatcher to accompany Thinker outside while he, Peacemaker, and Polka Dot Man are whisked away for questioning. Meanwhile, on the winding roads, the trio finds themselves facing off against a group of ruthless gun-wielding assailants. In a thrilling display of martial prowess, they effortlessly subdue their attackers, claiming victory by dispatching the driver before their own van is deliberately driven off the road. As if on cue, Ratcatcher and King Shark reappear with Thinker in tow, a stark reminder that this night is far from over.

In a separate corner of chaos, Harley Quinn finds herself trapped in a predicament of her own making. Tortured by Suarez’s henchmen for information she refuses to yield, she remains resolute in the face of physical and mental torment. When finally left alone with one of her tormentors, she seizes the opportunity to snap his neck with her agile legs, securing her freedom. With a wicked grin, Harley sets about dispatching Suarez’s guards with an arsenal of blades and Javelin’s trusty javelin, carving a bloody path through her would-be captors. Outside, Flag attempts to lead The Squad in a daring rescue mission to liberate Harley, only for her to burst forth from the shadows and join forces with them. With Thinker in custody, they concoct a plan to infiltrate Jotunheim, their sights set on securing the upper hand in this escalating game of cat and mouse.

As Thinker’s (character name not provided) gruesome demise serves as a grim introduction, he leads the Squad into the belly of the beast: Starro The Conqueror. Peacemaker and Nanaue meticulously set explosive devices throughout the facility, while Thinker reveals to the team that their government has been secretly bankrolling Corto Maltese’s sinister experiments for decades. But this revelation is mere appetizer to the horror that awaits. Starro itself emits smaller starfish that attach themselves to human faces, transforming victims into mindless zombies. The air is thick with the stench of death as the team surveys the carnage left in Starro’s wake: a grotesque graveyard of corpses.

As Thinker attempts to reason with the Squad, Starro suddenly breaks free and snatches him, tearing him asunder and scattering his remains across the wall. Flag tries to salvage the situation by securing evidence against the American government on a hard drive, but Peacemaker betrays him at Waller’s behest. The two engage in a fierce battle, with Flag nearly choking the life out of Peacemaker before being brutally stabbed through the heart with a shard of broken porcelain.

Meanwhile, Ratcatcher witnesses this bloodbath and seizes the opportunity to grab the crucial flash drive as Peacemaker tries to silence her. Nanaue’s journey takes an uncanny turn when he encounters fish that eerily mimic his own appearance. However, their aquarium is shattered, and they begin to cling to him like leeches.

As the facility begins to implode, Bloodsport, Harley, and Polka Dot Man fight for survival amidst chaos and destruction. Bloodsport miraculously survives a death-defying plunge through multiple stories before landing and stumbling upon Peacemaker preparing to execute Ratcatcher. The two mercenaries engage in a fierce firefight, with Bloodsport’s bullet ultimately striking true, felling Peacemaker.

King Shark falls prey to Suarez’s men outside but rises from the ashes, decapitating one gunman before the remaining Squad members make their escape as Starro bursts forth. It unleashes a tidal wave of starfish, claiming the lives of Suarez and his cohorts before marching into the city. Waller declares mission accomplished since the evidence is now in ruins, but the surviving team members refuse to abandon hope.

Waller threatens to detonate the devices, condemning her team to instant death, until Flo Crawley (Tinashe Kajese) intervenes with a golf club-wielding coup d’état. The surviving Squad members are left with no choice but to guide their fallen comrades in a desperate bid to save the city from Starro’s malevolent grasp.

Concurrently, Sol and her team execute a daring operation to eliminate the remaining regime forces, paving the way for their own coup and the liberation of their nation.

The battle against Starro reaches its climax as Bloodsport unleashes a barrage of blows on the extraterrestrial invader, while King Shark indulges in an unsettling display of cannibalism, crunching down on the alien’s tender flesh. Meanwhile, Polka Dot Man’s fragile psyche is transported back to his childhood, and he sees Starro as his overbearing mother - his polka dots glowing with a fierce intensity as he attempts to exact revenge, only to be brutally crushed by the merciless alien. Ratcatcher, desperate to turn the tide, activates her beacon, but Bloodsport intervenes just in time, saving her from a gruesome fate. Seizing the initiative, Ratcatcher summons an army of rats, which swarm the city’s infected citizens and eventually overwhelm Starro from within. Harley Quinn seizes the moment, charging into Starro’s eye with her trusty javelin and shattering the alien’s defenses before the rats finish the job, ultimately vanquishing the monstrous visitor and restoring order to the city. As the heroes’ exploits are broadcast across the media landscape, Tyla is compelled to acknowledge her father’s bravery.

In a bold move, Bloodsport reaches out to Waller, dictating that she release the team and her daughter from captivity or risk having incriminating evidence of the laboratory’s activities exposed to the world. Reluctantly, Waller acquiesces, ordering the chopper to retrieve them. As the team rests and recovers, Sebastian, Bloodsport’s loyal rat companion, insinuates himself onto his leg, and Bloodsport begins to tenderly groom him.

In the mid-credits sequence, a shocking development unfolds as Weasel is revealed to be alive and meandering through the jungle of Corto Maltese. The very fabric of reality seems to bend and warp around this enigmatic figure.

The post-credits scene finds Waller’s loyal subordinates, John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), brought before a mysterious entity. It becomes clear that Peacemaker is still alive, and his utility as a potential savior has not diminished in Waller’s eyes - Harcourt candidly remarking, “We need him to save the fucking world.”
