Plot Summary

In 1995, Eleanor Young (played by Michelle Yeoh) arrives at a London hotel with her son, Nick, his sister-in-law, and niece. However, they are met with snobbery by the reception staff who inform them that their reserved room is unavailable. Left with no choice, Eleanor must resort to using a public phone to contact her husband. Upon her return to the hotel, the owner greets her warmly and introduces her as the establishment’s new owner, showcasing the family’s undeniable wealth.

Fast forward to the present, where Rachel Chu, an accomplished economics professor at New York University (NYU), demonstrates her expertise in a poker game, enlightening her class on game theory with the insight that “the key is playing to win, instead of trying not to lose.”

Rachel receives an unexpected invitation from her boyfriend, Nick Young, to join him in Singapore for his best friend Colin’s wedding. As whispers of their relationship circulate online, Eleanor becomes aware of Rachel’s presence in Nick’s life. Surprised by Nick’s extravagant arrangements for their trip, Rachel struggles to comprehend his family’s affluent lifestyle.

In Singapore, Rachel and Nick enjoy a meal at a bustling hawker center with Colin and his fiancée Araminta. The next day, Rachel reconnects with her college buddy Peik Lin, who takes her to a gathering hosted by Nick’s family. Unfortunately, Rachel’s lack of acquaintance with the family’s customs leads to several gaffes, and she feels the sharp scrutiny of Eleanor, who clearly disapproves of her. However, Rachel manages to charm Nick’s grandmother, Su Yi.

Rachel attends Araminta’s hens party, while Nick celebrates his bachelor party with Colin aboard a ship, where tensions also rise due to their obnoxious friend Bernard. At the party, Rachel encounters Amanda, who poses as a friend but sabotages Rachel’s confidence by revealing her past relationship with Nick. The situation escalates when Amanda’s accomplices vandalize Rachel’s belongings, branding her a “gold digging b***h.” Fortunately, Nick’s cousin Astrid offers Rachel support, sharing her own struggles with a cheating spouse.

After confiding in Nick about her distressing experience, he apologizes for hiding his wealth and takes her to learn how to make dumplings with his family. As Rachel admires Eleanor’s stunning engagement ring, Eleanor recounts her own love story and the sacrifices she made to join the family. Yet, when Rachel discreetly overhears Eleanor’s disdainful remarks, proclaiming she will never truly belong with Nick, she is left contemplating leaving Singapore. Motivated by Peik Lin’s support and her newfound confidence, Rachel undergoes a glamorous transformation just in time for the wedding.

During the wedding ceremony, Rachel showcases her grace and impresses many, winning over even the notoriously chilly Princess Intan. However, the celebration quickly turns sour when Eleanor and Su Yi apprehend Rachel to share alarming secrets about her family background, revealing the truth about her mother Kerry. Heartbroken, Rachel flees in tears, prompting Nick to give chase despite the family tension it stirs.

Days later, Rachel stays with Peik Lin, where she learns that Kerry has traveled to Singapore to make amends. Kerry reveals the truth of her tumultuous past and relationship with Rachel’s father, ultimately advising Rachel to reconcile with Nick. In a moment filled with emotion, Nick proposes to Rachel again.

After a poignant encounter at a Mahjong parlor with Eleanor, where Rachel declines the proposal to avoid jeopardizing Nick’s family ties, she symbolically sacrifices her dreams. As Rachel leaves the game, she feels empowered, stepping away with her mother. Soon after, Astrid confronts her cheating husband, and Rachel boards a flight back to the United States, only to be surprised by Nick’s arrival as he proposes once more, this time with Eleanor’s ring. Elated, Rachel accepts, extending their stay in Singapore to celebrate their engagement, during which Eleanor begrudgingly acknowledges Rachel’s worth. In a mid-credit scene, a chance encounter between Astrid and her ex-fiancé Charlie Wu stirs anticipation for what lies ahead.
