Why did Wade Wilson initially travel to Earth-616?

Plot Summary

As the clock struck 2018, Wade Wilson (Deadpool) seized the reins of Cable’s time-traveling contraption, hurtling himself from the dystopian confines of Earth-10005 to the seemingly idyllic Sacred Timeline on Earth-616. Here, he crossed paths with Happy Hogan, extending an olive branch and requesting membership in the esteemed Avengers. However, his appeal fell on deaf ears.

Six years of self-imposed exile from his masked mercenary persona as Deadpool had seen Wade trading in his guns for a used car salesman’s lot, following a painful breakup with Vanessa Carlysle. As he celebrated another birthday in solitude, the Time Variance Authority (TVA) swooped in, snatching Wade and presenting him to enigmatic Mr. Paradox. The latter offered Wade a chance to reside on Earth-616, but this benevolence was tempered by the revelation that Wade’s own timeline was imploding due to the untimely demise of James “Logan” Howlett – his world’s anchor being.

In a desperate bid to salvage his reality, Wade pilfered Paradox’s TemPad and embarked on a perilous journey through the multiverse, seeking a variant of Logan capable of resurrecting his dying timeline. His quest led him down various paths, as he encountered diverse incarnations of the X-Men’s Wolverine. Ultimately, he stole one such variant back to the TVA, only to discover that this particular Logan had ravaged his universe before being pruned into the Void by Paradox.

As Wade and Logan clashed, they found themselves ensnared by Cassandra Nova – a mind-manipulating mastermind with ties to the TVA. Upon arriving at her lair, she revealed her pact to remain in the Void as a gang leader, effortlessly dispatching Johnny Storm before taunting Wade with his perceived irrelevance. However, Alioth’s impending arrival prompted Wade and Logan to make a break for freedom.

Following their escape, they stumbled upon a variant of themselves – Nicepool – who bestowed upon them a vehicle, facilitating their journey to the Void’s borderlands in search of the resistance fighting against Nova’s forces. Here, they reunited with Elektra Natchios, Blade, Remy LeBeau, and X-23, collectively known as the “Others.” The Others proposed an alliance with Wade and Logan to vanquish Nova, but Wolverine remained skeptical, only to eventually relent after a heart-to-heart with X-23 regarding his inability to rescue the X-Men in his own universe.

As Wade, Logan, and the Others converge on Nova’s stronghold, they’re met with a shocking sight: Nova has Logan mentally enthralled, but Wade swiftly intervenes, donning Juggernaut’s helmet to neutralize her formidable powers. Pyro emerges from the shadows, revealing himself as Paradox’s sleeper agent tasked with eliminating Nova, and in a sudden turn of events, he opens fire on his former ally. Logan seizes the opportunity to reason with Wade, persuading him to remove the helmet and allow Nova to recover, in exchange for her aid in opening a portal that transports them to Wade’s native timeline, Earth-10005.

Upon arrival, they’re met with an unsettling discovery: Paradox has commandeered the “Time Ripper,” his own invention designed to euthanize timelines, and intends to unleash it on Wade’s reality without permission from his superior. Nova, arriving via another portal, swiftly apprehends the treacherous Paradox, while Wade and Logan find themselves battling an army of Deadpool variants pouring in through a swirling portal. As chaos erupts, Nova seizes control of the Time Ripper, determined to obliterate all sense of time as retribution for Paradox’s betrayal.

Paradox, in a chilling revelation, informs Wade and Logan that the only way to disrupt the Time Ripper’s power flow is to sacrifice their own lives. Undaunted, the duo uses their bodies as conductors to destroy Nova and the Time Ripper, emerging unscathed but forever changed. Hunter B-15 subsequently apprehends Paradox, bringing his treachery to an end.

With the crisis averted, Wade requests that the Others be returned to their respective timeliness, while Logan is granted permission to remain in Wade’s reality, no longer bound by the constraints of entropy. As he prepares to depart, Logan expresses hope for a change in his past, only to be rebuked by B-15, who reminds him that his experiences have made him an anchor crucial to saving Wade’s timeline, and thus, there is no reason to alter the course of events. With this realization, Logan chooses to retire from the fray, opting instead for a peaceful existence.

Before Logan’s departure, Wade invites Logan and Laura to meet his friends, an opportunity that sparks a newfound sense of camaraderie within Wade. Encouraged by Logan’s words, Wade reaches out to Vanessa, mending their relationship in the process.
