Plot Summary

After two years of serving as the mercenary known as Deadpool, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) faces a setback when he fails to eliminate a target just as he is preparing to celebrate his anniversary with his girlfriend, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). The target hides in a panic room, forcing Wade to choose between completing his mission and rushing to Vanessa, who has just decided to stop taking her birth control in hopes of starting a family. Tragically, the target tracks them down and kills Vanessa while she is pregnant, prompting Wade to seek vengeance on her killer and leading him to blame himself for her death.

In a state of despair, Wade attempts suicide by blowing himself up six weeks later. Before his final act, he spends time with his best friend, Weasel (T. J. Miller), and continues to live with Blind Al (Leslie Uggams). During his last moments, Wade encounters a vision of Vanessa in the afterlife, where she advises him that he is not ready for death and that his “heart’s not in the right place.” Meanwhile, his physical form, despite his attempts on his life, is pieced back together by Colossus (Stefan Kapicic), an X-Man with the ability to transform his body into organic steel. Wade keeps a lead Skee-Ball token as a precious memento of Vanessa.

Upon recovery at the X-Mansion, Wade decides to join the X-Men as a form of healing. Alongside Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), he responds to an urgent situation at an orphanage that is actually a front for a “Mutant Reeducation Center,” where a young mutant named Russell Collins (Julian Dennison), also known as Firefist, is under threat from a time-traveling cybernetic soldier, Cable (Josh Brolin). Cable’s mission is to prevent Russell from becoming a killer in the future after witnessing the devastation this causes to his own family.

As Wade tries to navigate this complex web of relationships and threats, he finds himself at odds with Colossus, who attempts to guide him toward a path of righteousness. Following his instincts, Wade confronts the brutal headmaster of the Essex Home for Mutant Rehabilitation, who has been abusing the children in his care, leading to a desperate struggle for survival where Wade and Russell end up taking drastic measures that land them in a prison known as “The Icebox.”

Wade and Russell soon learn of each other’s tragic stories. In prison, Russell befriends Juggernaut, a powerful mutant who later becomes his ally in the quest for revenge against their shared abuser. As Wade assembles a ragtag team known as X-Force, which includes Bedlam (Terry Crews), Shatterstar (Lewis Tan), Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgård), and Peter (Rob Delaney), they undertake an audacious mission to rescue Russell during a prisoner transfer. Unfortunately, the mission goes awry, resulting in casualties, but Wade and the lucky gambler, Domino (Zazie Beetz), manage to survive.

As they fight to keep Russell from following his dark path, the story continues to spiral with complicated encounters and a struggle for identity and redemption. In a pivotal moment where Wade attempts to speak sense into Russell, he jeopardizes his own life by jumping in front of Cable’s bullet, which leads to a touching reunion with Vanessa in the afterlife. Through a series of unexpected twists, including a heartfelt sacrifice that alters the future, Wade ultimately helps Russell see the light and veer away from violence.

In a surprising turn of events, all culminates with Russell enacting his own justice against his tormentor, and Wade taking a stand for his loved ones. In a mid-credits sequence, the plot deepens as Negasonic and her girlfriend, Yukio (Shiori Kutsuna), repair Cable’s time-travel device, allowing Wade to change history by saving those he cares for and rewinding the timeline in cleverly humorous ways, ensuring that the lives of Vanessa, Peter, and even his own are secured.
